Insidious: The Last Key

Beep boop activate scare mode beep boop.

This month we covered the only thing that we really could for this movie trilogy. I’m being serious right now, there’s surprisingly, absolutely nothing else we could do for Insidious unless we watched something else that James Wan or Leigh Whannell has done. It’s Insidious: The Last Key, written by Leigh Whannell and released on January 5, 2018.

Show-notes:

0:47 Yup, still there.
1:42 Kwan Tak-hing portrayed famous martial artist Wong Fei-hung in over 70 movies, but I don’t think they were all part of the same franchise.
5:44 Superbad?
6:47 Reservoir Doigs is Quentin Tarantino’s first movie and it’s not great.
13:19 According to Nameslist.org, Imagen stands for Industrious Methodical Affectionate Good Emotional Nonconforming. Must be true.
14:50 Follow him on Twitter.
15:12 Pixels sounds really bad.
24:35 A Quiet Place actually looks like it could be good.
24:49 I seriously don’t care about movie reviews, either from fans or “critics,” but this 12% is pretty pathetic.
24:53 Congratulations Blumhouse, you’re finally there, now sit on your throne as the overlords of scare.
25:06 Does the Black Panther trailer belong in front of a horror movie? You decide.
25:15 Yet another one of those trailers that spoils most of the movie. At least Midnight Sun looks terrible so I have no desire to watch it anyway.
33:40 Try and name even one good superhero/comic book movie from the last decade. Go ahead. I guarantee you won’t be able to. And The New Mutants continues that trend.

Episode 6: Medieval Chic (Seek-Locate-Destroy)

Here rests medieval fashion, taken from us too soon.

We’ve caught up to Kiyan’s prescreening of Blake’s 7. Basically he watched up to this point before we even started the show, because… well… actually I don’t really know. Why not? It’s Seek, Locate, Destroy, written by Terry Nation and aired on February 6, 1978.

Show-notes:

1:33 Just looked this up and realized it stars Havok from X-men.
2:55 Check out Down and Safe podcast. Don’t really know anything about them since I’ve only listened to like 20 minutes of them in total. They are taking forever to watch the show thought.

186: Weird Sci-Fi Rain (Smith and Jones)

Everybody knows that sci-fi rain is better than regular rain.

This week we start another season of reboot Doctor Who. We’re really motoring on through these, we’re a third of the way through 10’s run already, can you believe it? It’s Smith and Jones, written by Russell T. Davies and aired on March 31st, 2007.

Show-notes:

5:40 The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande is a book about how surgeons implemented checklists into their surgery process and improved it and stuff.
11:47 Yeah, Jamie uses the John Smith name in a hospital.
27:01 The Haemovores were actually from The Curse of Fenric.

Episode 5: I Don’t Want to Know Anything (The Web)

That’s the truth really, just take all my knowledge away thanks.

We’ve returned to Blake’s 7 again because I think this is actually a thing we’re doing. Basically no going back now, Episode 5 is the point of no return. Before then you can just bail but now we can’t go back. No choice. It’s The Web, written by Terry Nation and aired on January 30, 1978.

Show-notes:

0:33 Michael E. Briant directed The Sea Devils, The Green Death, and Robots of Death among other things. Also worked on Colony in Space, a story that I completely forgot existed. And I still can’t remember anything about it now that I’m reminded of its existence.
2:43 Making Blake’s 7 is a really informative Twitter account, but I just hate how smug they are about everything and how they post stuff like “Want more rare pics of the Liberator? Then make sure this tweet gets a hundred likes, retweet it a billion times, tell all your friends, then wire me $600,000 dollars, thx” Complete B.S.
17:10 Not even Lin Shaye could save Insidious: The Last Key. I don’t think it was as bad as most people are saying, but it still sucked.
17:14 We do this other thing and stuff.

185: Who Haven’t the Time Lords Killed? (The Runaway Bride)

So far they should honestly be at the top of the kill count if we had them on there.

Trust Your Doctor moves through the years pretty quickly, which means it’s already Christmas again. Yes, that’s right, it’s Christmas. Merry Christmas. It’s The Runaway Bride, written by Russell T. Davies and aired on December 25, 2006.

Show-notes:

1:23 There were a lot of different versions/recordings, too many to list here, but the wiki has them all.
25:29 Arachne.
36:25 Best quality that 5 seconds of googling could find. Poor aliens.

Special 8: The Four Year Anniversary!

I only know one thing: the podcast must die.

Well this year we put out our least enthusiastic and most unnecessary anniversary episode ever. Next year’s going to be a big celebration because it’s our 5-year, and then after that it’s kind of “eh who cares.” You feel me? Anyway, thank you all for listening, it really means the world to us!

Show-notes:

9:36 You can find Flight Through Entirety here and Krynoid Podcast here. Links to where you can find their podcasts and their other accounts are on their pages.
10:38 What could possibly be a better Christmas present than a relatively uninformed Blake’s 7 podcast?

Episode 4: Step Up Your Terrorism Game (Time Squad)

I think we need to reevaluate our jokes.

Terry Nation has, predictably, already run out of ideas. It’s only episode 4! It gets even worse next week, episode 5 he somehow rips off all sorts of nonsense. Man this show went downhill fast. It’s Time Squad, written by Terry Nation and aired on January 23, 1978.

Show-notes:

0:39 Lot of good stuff, including Face of Evil and Shaaaadaaaaaaa.
27:42 According to Wikipedia, a black box is “a device, system, or object which can be viewed in terms of” oh wow I’m already bored.

184: Cockblocked by the Universe (Army of Ghosts & Doomsday)

Universe turns out to be kind of a jerk this week.

Well, nothing even worth watching for anymore. Rose is “dead”, the Doctor is about to become a mopey teenage boy, and Russell T. has clearly run out of ideas already. It’s Army of Ghosts and Doomsday, written by Russell T. Davies and aired on July 1st and 8th, 2006.

Episode 3: Disintegrated by Technobabble (Cygnus Alpha)

Now we see the true danger of technobabble.

We’re continuing along our journey, although perhaps The Doctor has buggered with the show a bit, both our show and Blake’s 7 itself. It appears we have a bit of a timeline discontinuity that somebody didn’t notice in the production room. It’s Cygnus Alpha, written by Terry Nation and aired on January 16, 1978.

Show-notes:

4:10 Strangely I couldn’t find anything, but here’s this forum thread where some people tried to create a full timeline of Blake’s 7 episodes and audios/other expanded material.
5:53 The more you know. There are actually debates about this, so don’t take this as the only explanation out there.
21:18 Wow, I always thought this was based on Hunchback of Notre Dame. Guess it’s not.

183: At Least We Have Eurovision (Fear Her)

America has it now too. I think.

This week we’re continuing the whole “Doctor Who sucks and we’re pretty sure we should just shut it all down right now” thing we started last week. Trust us, it’s bad. It’s Fear Her, written by Matthew Graham and aired on June 24, 2006.

Show-notes:

3:37 Stephen Fry. Never even heard of this guy.
10:16 Zenith is our new Blake’s 7 podcast. You can find the newest episode of it, Space Fall currently, here.
16:59 Get in the damn box.
