Episode 9: The New Mutoids (Project Avalon)

And that’s how we got the newest hit superhero movie.

Why would anyone in their right mind name their secret government project after the person who is absolutely key to the project working? It’s supposed to be a secret project. Maybe I’m reading too deep into this. It’s Project Avalon, written by Terry Nation, and aired on February 27, 2018.

Show-notes:

1:20 Trust Your Doctor is our other podcast. Check it out and stuff.
3:28 The New Mutants looks terrible like basically every superhero movie.
19:04 Our newest episode of Trust Your Doctor is on Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks.
28:51 Occam’s razor states that the simplest shaving solution is always the best. Guess I’ll start shaving dry with just a straight razor now.
31:36 I don’t think you want to watch this Big Bang Theory without a laugh track video. I did. Now I see it in my nightmares.
46:33 Space Fall is another recent Blake’s 7 podcast. They know a lot more than us so check them out. They don’t have a website as far as I can tell so here’s their twitter. Down & Safe is probably the first Blake’s 7 podcast ever. They’re pretty irregular.

189: Hovering Over Hooverville (Daleks in Manhattan & Evolution of the Daleks)

So many hoovers, so little time.

And now, Martha Jones in her first two parter. Featuring the Daleks, because bloody hell do the Daleks ever not appear? Can you imagine if they named an episode “Mystery of the Daleks” and then didn’t have the Daleks appear at all? The mystery is, where are they? It’s Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks, written by Helen Raynor and aired on April 21 and 28, 2007.

Show-notes:

14:47 More about the building of the Empire State Building here.
18:36 They should start using man o’ wars in actual wars.
19:18 They should bring these back to actual warfare too.
25:09 This was all I could find about the “Daleks have to appear every season” rumor.
39:51 Our movie trilogy podcast Triple Play has conditioned me to think of Star Wars whenever anyone says “Do it”

Episode 8: Pride and Prejudice and Blake’s 7 (Duel)

The best Jane Austen rewrite is the one that features Kerr Avon.

This episode is pretty beloved. Not this episode of Blake’s 7, this episode of Zenith. It’s basically all down hill from here is what I’m saying. It’s Duel, written by Terry Nation and aired on February 20, 1978.

Show-notes:

0:40 Check out our long-running, award-winning, Doctor Who podcast Trust Your Doctor, which has been called a groundbreaking landmark in the Doctor Who podcasting world and hailed by millions as the greatest audio experience of the 21st century.
6:43 Eureka Seven is a Japanese animated series and one of my favorite tv series of all time. It’s heavily inspired by Blake’s 7.
20:44 War has changed.
25:22 I’ve never seen Darmok, but that alien looks pretty dumb. Just saying.
26:18 Martian Odyssey is a short story. Tweel for president.
26:40 The Martian is a 2015 comedy movie starring Matt Damon.
27:37 Check out our movie trilogy podcast Triple Play, which has been called a monumental achievement in the podcasting genre and gained internationally-recognized status as the official podcast of all 195 countries.
28:07 The Diamond Lens was actually written in 1858, but it’s still pretty insane and good.
32:04 This song from The Life of David Gale is used in a bunch of movie trailers.
32:42 Johan Johansson. RIP in pieces. Also, it’s called Sun’s Gone Dim.
43:05 Couldn’t find one for Crime and Punishment, but there’s always Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer.

188: Being Angry Isn’t That Fun (Gridlock)

Forget being angry, I’m all about being sad now.

Gridlock is unfairly maligned. I’m putting that opinion here in writing, so you can never argue that I’ve said it, even if the audio for this episode gets garbled and never released. Or corrupted by the forces that be (looking at you Russell T.) It’s Gridlock, written by Russell T. Davies and aired on April 14, 2007.

Show-notes:

17:51 Couldn’t have been Christmas Invasion since Janis Joplin died in 1970.
18:22 STEED
21:02 I guess Old Rugged Cross is a southern song because this and all other versions of it that I could find sound pretty southern.
21:06 Stand by m- I mean Abide with Me.
27:06 Last of the Gadarene is a Third Doctor book by Mark Gatiss. If you’re watched or read anything else by Mark Gatiss, then you already know the story of this book. We’re onto you Mark.

Episode 7: Agatha Christie in Space (Mission to Destiny)

I think I might have used this as a title before…

I think Terry Nation is out of ideas. Just flat out, like, I’m sure he just kind of read the back of his orange juice in the morning and tore the label off to give to Chris Boucher. It’s Mission to Destiny, written by Terry Nation, and aired on February 13, 1978.

Show-notes:

1:33 I wonder how bad this 2017 version is. Then again I wonder how bad the original is.
3:04 Guerrilla I guess. Not exactly but oh well.
11:52 It’s his last name. His first name is Olag, which I would make me think twice, double take, and spit out my drink.
13:18 Children of the Stones has Gareth Thomas playing a geologist who moves to a rural village when weird things start happening. It;s pretty good and only 7 episodes, so just watch it. Try this version edited together into a 2 and half hour movie, cause the original series feels like a chopped up movie anyway.
33:41 Not that I can find. Perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to break into the adding laugh tracks to shows without laugh tracks field.
34:08 Fresh Off the Boat is an example of a garbage American sitcom. Surprisingly based off of a book.
34:17 Oh god.

187: The History of Inn-keeping (The Shakespeare Code)

Inn-keeping is a very old and difficult profession.

This week Trust Your Doctor gets super spooky… in February. Why not, I guess, why not just release scary things in February? Nothing says you have to release them in October. It’s The Shakespeare Code, written by Gareth Roberts, and aired on April 7, 2007.

Show-notes:

0:38 Gareth Roberts didn’t write anything for series 1. The only things by him that we’ve covered are Bang-Bang-a-Boom, The Romance of Crime, The English Way of Death, and now this.
2:51 Yeah, Lilith is a demon or something.
20:49 The last time California carried out the death penalty was in 2006.
26:27 This Animaniacs reboot is the most necessary thing in years. Totally 100% needed and I’m sure it will be amazing and won’t even come close to sucking.
27:40 Yeah, it was Arthur C. Clarke.
41:54 This one.
43:16 This trailer for the 1993 Much Ado About Nothing movie kind of feels like it was a VHS preview rather than a theatrical trailer.

Insidious: The Last Key

Beep boop activate scare mode beep boop.

This month we covered the only thing that we really could for this movie trilogy. I’m being serious right now, there’s surprisingly, absolutely nothing else we could do for Insidious unless we watched something else that James Wan or Leigh Whannell has done. It’s Insidious: The Last Key, written by Leigh Whannell and released on January 5, 2018.

Show-notes:

0:47 Yup, still there.
1:42 Kwan Tak-hing portrayed famous martial artist Wong Fei-hung in over 70 movies, but I don’t think they were all part of the same franchise.
5:44 Superbad?
6:47 Reservoir Doigs is Quentin Tarantino’s first movie and it’s not great.
13:19 According to Nameslist.org, Imagen stands for Industrious Methodical Affectionate Good Emotional Nonconforming. Must be true.
14:50 Follow him on Twitter.
15:12 Pixels sounds really bad.
24:35 A Quiet Place actually looks like it could be good.
24:49 I seriously don’t care about movie reviews, either from fans or “critics,” but this 12% is pretty pathetic.
24:53 Congratulations Blumhouse, you’re finally there, now sit on your throne as the overlords of scare.
25:06 Does the Black Panther trailer belong in front of a horror movie? You decide.
25:15 Yet another one of those trailers that spoils most of the movie. At least Midnight Sun looks terrible so I have no desire to watch it anyway.
33:40 Try and name even one good superhero/comic book movie from the last decade. Go ahead. I guarantee you won’t be able to. And The New Mutants continues that trend.

Episode 6: Medieval Chic (Seek-Locate-Destroy)

Here rests medieval fashion, taken from us too soon.

We’ve caught up to Kiyan’s prescreening of Blake’s 7. Basically he watched up to this point before we even started the show, because… well… actually I don’t really know. Why not? It’s Seek, Locate, Destroy, written by Terry Nation and aired on February 6, 1978.

Show-notes:

1:33 Just looked this up and realized it stars Havok from X-men.
2:55 Check out Down and Safe podcast. Don’t really know anything about them since I’ve only listened to like 20 minutes of them in total. They are taking forever to watch the show thought.

186: Weird Sci-Fi Rain (Smith and Jones)

Everybody knows that sci-fi rain is better than regular rain.

This week we start another season of reboot Doctor Who. We’re really motoring on through these, we’re a third of the way through 10’s run already, can you believe it? It’s Smith and Jones, written by Russell T. Davies and aired on March 31st, 2007.

Show-notes:

5:40 The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande is a book about how surgeons implemented checklists into their surgery process and improved it and stuff.
11:47 Yeah, Jamie uses the John Smith name in a hospital.
27:01 The Haemovores were actually from The Curse of Fenric.

Episode 5: I Don’t Want to Know Anything (The Web)

That’s the truth really, just take all my knowledge away thanks.

We’ve returned to Blake’s 7 again because I think this is actually a thing we’re doing. Basically no going back now, Episode 5 is the point of no return. Before then you can just bail but now we can’t go back. No choice. It’s The Web, written by Terry Nation and aired on January 30, 1978.

Show-notes:

0:33 Michael E. Briant directed The Sea Devils, The Green Death, and Robots of Death among other things. Also worked on Colony in Space, a story that I completely forgot existed. And I still can’t remember anything about it now that I’m reminded of its existence.
2:43 Making Blake’s 7 is a really informative Twitter account, but I just hate how smug they are about everything and how they post stuff like “Want more rare pics of the Liberator? Then make sure this tweet gets a hundred likes, retweet it a billion times, tell all your friends, then wire me $600,000 dollars, thx” Complete B.S.
17:10 Not even Lin Shaye could save Insidious: The Last Key. I don’t think it was as bad as most people are saying, but it still sucked.
17:14 We do this other thing and stuff.
40:50 Triple Play and Trust Your Doctor.
