Inevitable

We’re not doing this for you.

We’re not doing it for us.

We know not at what depths the currents that compelled us to discuss and “review” classic sci-fi tv and movies in a laid-back, slightly analytical, somewhat-humorous fashion run.

So what do we know?

It was all inevitable.

UFO 7 – Kill Straker!

Something something, we didn’t even make an Eldrad Must Die reference somehow.

Honestly, with a name like Straker, it’s not too hard to comprehend why people would want to kill him. I mean, it’s such a pretentious name. Just listen to it as it rolls off the tongue. Straker. It’s harsh. Arrogant. Bombastic. Not saying we should kill Straker, just saying i empathize with Foster. It’s Kill Straker!, written by Donald James and aired on November 4, 1970.

Show-notes:
2:57: We have an episode on The Prisoner’s Living in Harmony, if you’re so inclined to listen to more Inevitable. Also: The Girl Who was Death.
5:1: Redshirts is a good book, I would recommend you pick it up.
17:00: This is like the third time I’ve linked this Shado Library timeline.
20:27: Here’s that quora link for everyone following along at home. And yes, we have googled whether you can reattach someone’s ear for our podcasts. Don’t ask.
24:45: For more about Doctor Who, check out Doctor Who. Alternatively, check out our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast.
50:50: Conveniently for you, dear audience, we have an episode of Trust Your Doctor on Curse of Fenric. Apparently I can’t even remember the name of the serial correctly, oops.
52:38: Here’s the Dumb and Dumber scene I was talking about. Not as overblown as I remembered it. Also, it was Jeff Daniels’ character, not Jim Carey’s.
55:17: Check out Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast, our Blake’s 7 podcast.
56:23: Anorak Zone ranks this episode as the 17th best of UFO.
1:02:15: Are we filthy corpos too? (Editor’s note: I am. Dylan’s not.)
1:06:20: Wikipedia calls Afrikaans a “daughter language” of Dutch. Apparently I also had the direction of the mutual intelligibility backwards. See the link for more information.

UFO 6 – E.S.P.

I used to have ESP, then I took an arrow to the brain.

Can’t believe I just unironically referenced Skyrim in the episode description. When was the last time that was even relevant? Would you consider magical mind reading as ESP? That feels like a whole new can of worms that I’ll leave closed for now. You’re welcome. It’s ESP, written by Alan Fennel and aired on October 21, 1970.

Show-notes:

4:02: For a more incompetently cobbled together podcast overall, check out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast.
5:55: If you’re a fan of Blake’s 7, I highly recommend checking out Making Blake’s 7 on twitter. He documents tons of behind-the-scenes stuff that no one’s ever seen before.
14:34: His name is actually Michael Billington, and he really was in contention for the role of Bond.
33:39: Well, here’s information about the Unabomber for this unaware, I guess.
35:56: He Who Remains really broke the fourth wall.
56:40: Definitely not.
57:13: Good news, the TARDIS wiki has a page on Shockeye.
1:00:57: John Dies at the End is a thing, I guess.
1:03:06: Check out CRT Pixels on twitter for examples of this.
1:04:00: Children of the Stones really was 2 years ago, damn. (Editor’s note: can’t believe 2020 was 15 years ago.)
1:05:57: The series, I guess if you’re really curious, is called Bug Out. And here’s the commercial. Kiyan probably shouldn’t watch this. (Editor’s note: this was actually funny.)

UFO 5 – A Question of Priorities ft. Steven Shinder

I have plenty of questions about this episode, to be honest.

Look, if I’m being straight with you, I always go into every episode of UFO with a bunch of questions. Dozens of them. Hundreds even. And every time the episode answers every single one of them. Can you believe that? Really just proves how good of a show this is. It’s A Question of Priorities, written by Tony Barwick and aired on October 14, 1970.

Show-notes:
0:55: Kiyan and I decidedly did not find Love and Monsters funny, as you can hear in our Trust Your Doctor episode on it.
9:22: Here’s a random excerpt from the 2018 Doctor Who marathon on Twitch. It’s from Barbara and Ian’s departure.
18:16: Good news for our audio listeners (everyone) we have a picture of Straker’s car steering wheel. (Editor’s note: Damn that falls pretty high on the hilarity scale.)
21:42: Anorak Zone is definitely the MVP of Inevitable. Here’s their UFO ranking.
23:37: The Last of Sheila is a whodunnit, which are always fun you know.
26:06: Thanks for plugging Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast, this week, Steven.
26:31: This is what a macaque is.
27:27: Damn, I forgot about this episode of Extreme Cheapskates where this lady cooks a lasagna via dishwasher. I didn’t rewatch the full clip for the purposes of this note, but you can if you want to. Knock yourself out.
29:26: Have some information on the history of Penicillin. Also, bacteria were actually discovered in 1676.
33:03: Early Inevitable episodes are availableat your local podcasting platform.
36:39: Star Maidens is a British-German show. Both its (Star Maidens’) wikipedia page and the random anecdotes I’ve heard about it call it a battle of the sexes type thing in space.
38:45: Don’t tell Steven but I’ve only ever watched the movie version of Red Dragon.
40:00: For all 0 people reading this who care about Yugioh (or even know what it it), check out Twitch reacting to the reveal of Dark Magician Girl.
52:3: Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
1:01:00: The Gerry Anderson website’s article on the missing ending to this episode seems somewhat legit.
1:07:50: The Outer Limits (1963) somehow wasn’t deleted off everyone’s tapes back in the day. (Editor’s note: I have no idea what this means.)
1:18:35 We’ve watched that.
1:19:44: This limerick only appears on Leigh Mercer’s wikipedia page, as basically the only important thing he ever did.

UFO 4 – Conflict

This week on Inevitable: mild conflict over whether this episode is good or not.

Was Conflict good? Was it bad? Don’t worry, it’s all up to you. We  just sit here and talk about the episode for an hour and that’s about all we’re good at, if you think about it. We can really lay on those plot summaries like nobody else. Enough talk, it’s Conflict, written by Ruric Powell and aired on October 7, 1970.

Show-notes:
1:00: I was probably actually thinking of how often Loki says he has “glorious purpose”.
5:47: Realizing I need to link the TARDIS wiki page on Yates since a bunch of our fans are probably not Doctor Who fans. (Editor’s note: here’s the page on Benton for good measure. And the page on Yeats. Why not? For more on anything related to Doctor Who, check out the definitive source on the show sanctioned by the BBC itself: our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast.)
29:23: I bet Kiyan will link this episode of Evangelion. (Editor’s note: No, but it was episode 11.)
30:19: Yeah, it’s Peter Carlin, not George Carlin.
44:42: Looks like Destination Moonbase Alpha was compiled from episodes of Space: 1999 if I’m reading this correctly.
46:40: “Don’t worry, I decided not to do it so Kiyan could have the satisfaction of doing it for himself.” -Dylan, 2022. Be sure to check out Delayed Replay, a podcast by friend of the show Steven Shinder.
48:20: If for some reason you want to listen to us talk about Blake’s 7 more than we do here, check out the entire podcast we did on it, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
49:53: Based on the Webster definition of “fray” it is definitely not the word I wanted to use here.

UFO 3 – The Cat With Ten Lives

Today’s not-title title: “The Huskies of the Cat World”.

I have an aunt who has a Husky, actually. She’s really cute. The dog. Although, to be fair I guess, I’ve never actually met the dog since she got it after the last time we visited the country. The dog could be a ferocious killer for all I know. It’s The Cat With Ten Lives, written by David Tomblin and aired on September 30, 1970.

Show-notes:
1:05:
Sorry Nathan. The podcast we’re referring to here is Flight Through Entirety.
1:57: I’m pretty much just reading off David Tomblin’s Wikipedia page.
5:10: For more on Torchwood, you could watch Torchwood. Or you could do the smart thing and check out our coverage of Torchwood on Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast.
17:20: Living in Harmony and Fall Out, two great Prisoner episodes. Interestingly, Living in Harmony was cowritten by David Tomblin.
19:50: Here’s a deep cut to Tintin, Thomson and Thompson.
20:38: Courage the Cowardly Dog was a TV show. (Editor’s note: kind of underselling it but fine.)
25:49: Crying of Lot 49 is by Thomas Pynchon. If it’s anything like the last Pynchon book I started, it’s impossible to comprehend sober.
26:15: The Postal Investigative Service has their own website.
31:38: Apparently The Spruce Eats has a sister site named The Spruce Pets. Here’s a page about Siamese cats, or something.
32:23: Read these random facts about Sphynx cats over on Wikipedia.
48:13: Have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise?
55:41: Cats was a travesty of a movie released in 2019.

UFO 2 – Exposed

UFO really gunning for the Prisoner too with these one word titles.

Inevitable has a one word title too, actually. In a way. I mean, Inevitable is a single word, but we have a sub title too. A sub title about this podcast being about this podcast allegedly being about sci fi or something like that. I dunno, that’s what I’m told this show is about. I just show up each week and talk. It’s Exposed, written by Tony Barwick and aired on September 23, 1970.

Show-notes:
6:40: Is this the first time I’m linking the TARDIS wiki on Inevitable? Anyway, here’s mutos. (Editor’s note: Nah, probably not.)
7:10: Here’s a way better explanation of flapping than mine.
10:13: Apparently the etch a sketch has been manufactured by a new company since 2014.
13:50: Yeah, Straker is platinum blonde. Deal with it.
27:33: Snooping as usual was uploaded in 2008, which makes it 14 years old. Ish.
44:20: It appears that I clipped the microphone here. Oops.
47:33: You never go full force. (Editor’s note: I have never heard of this.)
50:00: Here’s a pdf of Benito Cereno if you want to become the second person to have read it this century.
55:45: Alright so The Magical World of Disney is actually part of a larger project anthology series thing from Disney. Early on, it was about Disney land, but looks like they branched out to other topics.
1:06:55: Here’s the song I use for my ringtone. Yeah.

UFO 1 – Identified

It’s like putting on your old comforting sweater.

“I know what a god damn Tesco express is”. These are the fateful words that mark our journey into the depths of 1970’s British television once again. If there are people more well versed, more well studied, in old British sci-fi television than we are and is under the age of 30, then let us know. Because frankly I don’t think there are. I’m also convinced that sentence is barely even grammatical and I expect Kiyan to complain about it later on. Oh well. It’s Identified, written by Gerry Anderson, Sylvia Anderson and Tony Barwick and aired on September 16, 1970.

Show-notes:
9:12: Why would you rename Doppelganger to Journey to the Far Side of the Sun? The latter is way cooler, fair, but why rename it at all?!
9:48: Sunshine and Solar Crisis are both about restarting the sun. Weird.
13:03: E-D-F! E-D-F! You’re welcome.
13:48: The 2004 Thunderbirds movie has an 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Thunderbirds Are Go is an animated reboot of the series that aired from 2015 to 2020.
17:35: This is as good a time as any to link ufoseries.com.
21:40: According to ufoseries dot come, the most recent UFO trading cards came out in 2004.
27:07: Here’s some “data” from Cambridge on how to pronounce “UFO.”
32:17: The book was The Eyre Affair, for anyone curious.
34:38: Oh so that’s why it’s called that.
34:52: I think this is the Family Guy chicken fight I was referring to here. Not 100% sure since there’s like 10 of them. Also, Family Guy sucks.
57:00: SHADO vehicles
1:14:30: The reason I said this is that Vila is the only character in Blake’s 7 who is in every episode. For more on Blake’s 7, watch Blake’s 7. Alternatively and/or additionally, check out our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
1:20:43: Is this the most specific award I’ve ever tried to give on the podcast?
1:26:00: CNN has an interesting little article on the bent nose of the Concorde.
1:27:30: Anorak Zone’s UFO episode ranking.
1:2800: I’m actually gonna link directly to the timeline page on shadolibrary.org.
1:30:43: I zoned out, I forgot to figure it out.

Childhood’s End 3 – The Children

If this had a title, it would be “The Illuminati-esque Drawings of a Four Year Old”

We have a tendency here at Decorative Vegetable towers to use the suffix “-esque” to describe things. We’ve done it on Trust Your Doctor (“PJ Hammond-esque”) and here on Inevitable (also “PJ Hammond-esque”), and now we do it once more. No, we didn’t use “PJ Hammond-esque” in this episode. It’s The Children, written by Matthew Graham and aired on December 16, 2015.

Show-notes:
10:28: We paid attention to these episodes.
14:07: Gonna be a bit of a lunatic and link the Harry Potter wiki page for the sign of the deathly hallows so you can see what I’m talking about. (Editor’s note: Literally what about this is being a lunatic?)
41:30: I was googling whether or not you’re supposed to dilute Koolaid and I kept finding people who have some sort of Koolaid lab for kids to understand concentrations and dilution. Neat? (Editor’s note: Yeah I mean I don’t know either. I just made this up on the spot. Sounds right though.)
53:30: don’t worry, the other guys name is Danny Glover.
1:01:32: This has to be at least the fifth time I’ve linked this Titanic meme for the podcast.
1:03:32: Sense*
1:05:12: We watched A Fistful of Dollars and the rest of the Dollars Trilogy on our movie trilogy podcast Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast.
1:05:40: I tried to find a clip of Cheyenne’s death in the movie but I could not. Oh well.
1:06:47: Here’s the poster for Once Upon a Time in the West.
1:15:00: What the hell is a microgenre and why do we call vaporwave a microgenre?

Childhood’s End 2 – The Deceivers

Warning: this episode is filled with deceit

I don’t know what exactly we’re deceiving you about but I know it’s somewhere in this episode. If you end up figuring out what it is, please let me know. Our email address is at the end of the episode, so  just listen until then and you can get it for yourself. It’s The Deceivers, written by Matthew Graham and aired on December 15, 2015.

Show-notes:
2:00: To my (Dylan, the guy who edits these episodes but not the show-notes) surprise, Kiyan sounds the same as always on the recording though I will admit he did not sound the same on the Skype call. (Editor’s note: Yeah I sound almost exactly the same.)
3:26: Good news, dear listener, I have a link to this article (“A New Beginning for Childhood’s End”) right here.
10:20:: This link to goodreads has the version of the book we’re both talking about here.
18:50: I don’t even want to remember Rubber, so just watch this trailer for Rubber and call it a day. (And google if you want to know more I guess.)
26:47: We actually were talking about this on recording. I think the internet has completely destroyed my short-term memory by this point.
47:50: I actually tried to look for this sound effect online but my google-fu failed and I couldn’t find a good rip of it anywhere.
1:02:21: Were you killed? Sadly yes… but I lived!
1:09:17: Takes 2 seconds to look up . I’m holding this against them.
1:11:14: The Brave Little Toaster is a movie about a brave… little… toaster.
1:19:01: Gonna start my new coffee table book “Tractors that look like trampolines” with the poster for this TV show.
1:21:39: reject humanity, return to monke.
1:27:09: Because we didn’t want to do 7 people’s television and movie history in one episode… Kiyan.
1:32:37: Here I’ll link Evolve for you.
1:34:11: He didn’t just “work with Nine Inch Nails on a music video” he was a contributor in varying capacities (including programmer, remixer and performer on synthesizer and theremin) on half a dozen NIN albums and songs.

Childhood’s End 1 – The Overlords

I think we should rename ourselves to Podcasting Overlords.

Isn’t it weird how the word “lord” is used in a lot of sci-fi? Like Time Lords… Overlords… Lords of Time…. lords… Look this was a way better point when I started this sentence than when I finished it. So you’re just going to have to pretend to agree with me. It’s The Overlords, written by Matthew Graham and aired on December 14, 2015.

Show-notes:
1:10: Get your own copy of the book here, at Barnes and Noble. For once I decided not to link amazon. (Editor’s note: Get it at a local bookstore.)
1:48: Xenogears is an rpg… or something. It’s also the subject matter of the best text-based let’s play ever made. By the way, the English translation for the game (impressively completed by translator Richard Honeywood) changes “Karellen” to “Krelian.” Maybe Honeywood didn’t get the reference? Could just be some sort of error as the English script also misrepresents the character name “Myyah” as “Miang.”
3:14: I’ve actually struggled to find an actual text quote of Kurt Vonnegut saying this, but to be fair I’ve struggled to find Vonnegut saying anything about Arthur C. Clarke even though they were well acquainted.
12:16: Arthur C. Clarke refers to “President Bush [senior]” in his introduction. Interestingly he also refers to the TV show V, which will get mentioned later in this podcast, in the same introduction as being a perfectly acceptable (to him) adaptation of Childhood’s End.
18:44: Check out our first episode on the Prisoner (2009).
21:25: A lot of my information on the behind the scenes “creation of” Childhood’s End is coming from this article here.
22:40: And the second article I’m referring to is this Rolling Stone article, which has much of the same information.
26:40: We have regretfully watched The Da Vinci Code and its sequels for our (also regretful) movie trilogy podcast Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast.
27:22: If you go and listen to our episodes on The Prisoner (2009) you can hear some of this confusion, especially towards the end of the season.
28:00 We have equally regretfully covered the Space Pirates (Doctor Who) on our Doctor Who Podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast. Multiple times.
31:30: Fully synthetic plastic was actually invented as early as 1907.
40:25: Torchwood’s Children of Earth. Good times. Not regretful at all. We watched it on Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast. Check out the first episode of it if it strikes your fancy.
49:35: Dylan said this because this was a reference to our Eve of the Daleks episode on Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast.
58:30: Daisy.
1:23:30: I don’t know how I forgot this, but the quote is from The Last Jedi, it’s Yoda talking to Luke.
1:25:33: Her name is Jennifer Anne.
1:44:44: We have also regretfully watched Alien 3 on Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast, our movie trilogy podcast.
