Inevitable

We’re not doing this for you.

We’re not doing it for us.

We know not at what depths the currents that compelled us to discuss and “review” classic sci-fi tv and movies in a laid-back, slightly analytical, somewhat-humorous fashion run.

So what do we know?

It was all inevitable.

Firefly 6 – Our Mrs. Reynolds

Can you imagine if one of us just showed up to the podcast one day and got married for doing it?

Look so once upon a time I’m sitting there and wait a minute I realized I started a description almost exactly the same way already this season on Inevitable. Shoot, I’m losing my touch and my creativity. It’s Our Mrs. Reynolds, written by Joss Whedon and aired on October 4, 2002

Show-notes:
1:48: We will not be watching LAX for this podcast, because it does not qualify even in the most tenuous and broad definition of “Sci-fi.”
6:27: Colin Gordon is the other Number 2 who appears more than once on The Prisoner (1967), appearing in both A. B. C. and The General.
12:47: I’m just going to quote Kiyan’s previous show note, because why not: “The Kuleshov effect is “a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation.””
17:05: I actually can’t remember which episode of Star Cops is the one where I (Dylan) went on a rant about taking paper to the moon, so here’s a link to Star Cops Episode 1, as covered on Inevitable.
23:47: The quote is “Get in good trouble, necessary trouble”.
27:45: Interestingly China is actually the opposite, leaving food on your plate is considered a respectful way to show that you ate enough.
33:10: It’s More Likely Than You Think.
37:55: Should we bring these 90s carpets back? Probably not.
43:01: The KGB invented lipstick that shot bullets because… I don’t know why.
44:13: They made this gun knife thing.
44:55:
57:04: “Fridging” is a trope where a female character is unceremoniously killed off (or “stuffed in the fridge”).
1:08:24: Check out Delayed Replay, and especially the K9: Timequake episode of Delayed Replay.
1:11:10: The Suite Life of Zack and Cody was a television show, and I wish we would stop talking about this to be honest.

Firefly 5 – Safe

Kiyan, as soon as we finish: Why the hell was this episode titled “Safe” anyway?

One day I’d like to be safe. Safe from all of this nonsense that we have to face in the world. Mostly the nonsense of the podcast. Every morning I wake up remembering that this is my life’s work, that this is what I’ll be remembered for when I’m gone. Sobering thoughts to wake up to. It’s Safe, written by Drew Z. Greenberg and aired on November 1, 2002

Show-notes:
0:52:  Here, enjoy the wikipedia page for Private Practice.
2:11: Drake Bell went to jail for child endangerment charges.
12:44: If you too haven’t watched High School Musical, here’s everything you ever needed to know on High School Musical.
15:00: There’s an apple wiki page for the iPod shuffle, of course.
16:06: XKCD 1053 (damn that’s old) (Editor’s note: Yeah, XKCD is old as hell, which in [art explains why it’s so unfunny.)
19:24: Could’ve fooled me.
28:24: Patrick Jane is one of the coolest television characters. Etymonline says that Jane is a female name. The etymonline bio page is a pretty interesting read too.
29:08: Behold the extensive work of almost one single person bringing to you the etymology of the name Jane.
36:54: For (WAY) more on the guns of Firefly, check out the show’s IMFDB page.
41:23: The Prisoner (1967)
51:40: Here’s the article on “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” I was talking about.
1:06:43: Here’s the paste article I talk about for a while.
1:08:20: Netflix still sends out DVDs, and dvd.com redirects to the brand new dvd.netflix.com.
1:09:05: The only citations I could find for there being a Chinese proverb about badly carved swans is, amazingly, Firefly. But I did find the first half of the proverb in a slightly different form, that is, “He painted a tiger, but it turned out a dog” although even that is unsourced. Make of this what you will.

Firefly 4 – Shindig

The titles of these episodes are wack. Like who the hell says “shindig” anymore?

So I went to a party the other week right, and I was having a good time. Then all of a sudden I look over and out of the corner of my eye some lunatic just punches another guy in the face? What the heck was that? Anyway, I didn’t think too much more about it, I was only there for the free food anyway. It’s Shindig, written by Jane Espenson and aired on November 1, 2002

Show-notes:
1:22: I guess Vern Gillum just vanished from the TV world.
2:51: Here’s a CNBC article talking about Nick Cage’s curious… money problems, let’s say.
3:41: Here’s Nicolas Cage on why Nicolas Cage will never see The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. “It’s just too much of a wacked-out trip,” says Cage.
4:51: Here’s imdb’s custom Firefly viewing order (bro) in case you’re interested.
5:25: It has actually been exactly 350 days between this episode going out and our episode on The Prisoner’s final episode Fall Out.
9:00: In hindsight I actually think Wikipedia reproduces Book’s intro exactly but does not include any of Mal’s.
16:07: Kerr Avon and Roj Blake are characters from Blake’s 7, a show we podcasted about on another podcast, our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
45:18: This wouldn’t happen with lightsabers. There’s no link in this show-note, I just hadn’t written one in a while and wanted to say something “witty.”
46:35: I’m gonna assume that Kiyan is referring to this movie from 1989: Snake Eater. (Yes. Here’s a trailer for it.)
49:01: I should’ve cut this accent but I didn’t, hope you appreciate.
53:10: Methanol will blind you, that shit is no joke.
55:57: Seaweeds, for example, are protists, not plants..
56:25: I realized people outside of the US might not know this reference, so here’s Chick-Fil-A themselves explaining it for you. (Editor’s note: Chick-Fil-A has a corporate blog, huh? Truly, every day we stray further from god’s light.)
59:09: Here’s For a Few Dollars More, and here’s A Room with a View, the book. Apparently it was also adapted into a movie which might be more apt for the medium we’re talking about here, but I digress.
1:01:35: I can’t believe I’m linking to Doctor Who on a Firefly podcast but here’s the TARDIS wiki article on The Impossible Astronaut.
1:03:12: Don’t worry, I’m here to tell you who the hell Cyril Shaps is, for all our American listeners. I’m starting to realize that this podcast is 50% references American’s won’t understand and 50% references Brits won’t understand.
1:07:14: Here’s the Karate Kid poster I was talking about.

Firefly 3 – Bushwhacked

I’ve never been bushwhacked, but I have been whacked. Unfortunately. (Editor’s note: wack.)

Now I’m pretty sure being bushwhacked just means you get whacked while you’re in a bush. I was in the mafia for a day, I can guarantee this is correct. Whenever my underboss would come to me to tell me to bushwhack someone this is exactly what he told me. Promise. It’s Bushwhacked, written by Tim Minear and aired on September 27, 2002

Show-notes:
2:22: Here’s the lexico definition of bushwhacked for all the budding etymologists in the audience. And here’s the Merriam Webster definition. And the Urban Dictionary definition I guess. Etymonline suggests a more sylvan origin to the word.
4:10: Check out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast.
5:46: Serenity: 1 hour 26 minutes. The Train Job: 43 minutes. Bushwhacked: 45 minutes.
6:50: Fine, fine, here’s the Family Guy cool whip bit. 15 seconds of googling has informed me that Family Guy was the originator of the bit.
7:52: The future versions of Dylan and Kiyan dropped in on our Five Doctors episode of Trust Your Doctor.
9:24: Dylan is, surprisingly, not lying when he explains all these nonsense Spikeball rules.
14:33: I’m just gonna link bigfinish.com for you so you can follow along with this next bit.
20:04: Finding Serenity is less an academic article and more a 256 page book of critical essays, apparently.
21:22: Glenn Yeffeth is actually some publisher/writer/marketer guy.
37:37: In My Mind is a… sort of semi biographical look at Patrick McGoohan.
53:48: The Kuleshov effect is “a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation.”
57:40: Apparently the name for these people, at least in WWII, were the Japanese Holdouts.
1:05:40: Something something wagon train to the stars.
1:07:13: Here you go, go learn about Zeno’s paradoxes to keep your evening interesting.
1:10:04: Warning: blood.
1:11:13: Wow, believe it or not I actually found the Godzilla site in my history. It’s not plain white, and was actually updated post release with a review of the film. From what I can see it was last updated in 2004.
1:13:28: Look at the poster for The Sarah Connor Chronicles and tell me it’s not the most 2008 thing you’ve ever seen.

Firefly 2 – The Train Job

Did you know Kiyan and I once wrote a whole outline for a story about a guy robbing a train?

This week we prove that watching Firefly was not a hoax of… weakly epic proportions. That’d actually be a terrible hoax, it’s a sci-fi show, why wouldn’t we watch it? Well good news is that by the time I’m writing this we’ve even recorded episode 3. Wow! It’s The Train Job, written by Joss Whedon and Tim Minear and aired on September 20, 2002

Show-notes:
1:37: We actually watched Blake’s 7 on our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
4:19: Here’s that AV Club review of The Train Job that I’m referencing in this next statement.
7:52: The Raab Collection has an interesting breakdown on the early history of the phrase “the south will rise again”.
12:28: Serenity (the movie) came out in 2005, but we shouldn’t confuse it with this other movie that came out in 2019… also named Serenity.
16:17: Here’s Greg Edmondson’s Wikipedia page to see if you too can randomly discover he composed something you like.
18:22: Chinese is a really interesting and fascinating language with dozens of dialects and a heavy dose of “what even makes a dialect?” sprinkled on top. I can’t even approach the complexity of the topic so I’ll let Asia Society do it for me.
20:18: “RP” in this context means roleplay “received pronunciation”.
23:40: Check out our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast.
25:02: Frost my tips and log me in.
33:33: Yeah I’m not gonna link this. (Here you go: Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse on wikipedia. Warning: graphic images)
35:17: We’ve actually watched the original 60s Ocean’s Eleven on Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast, our movie trilogy podcast.
39:32: Wow, Dylan sounds really disappointed that they didn’t kill him here.
43:43: Black lung is also known as coalworker’s pneumoconiosis. Not for the faint of heart. Or lungs.
48:42: Here’s an article outlining The Crow and the death of Brandon Lee therein.
53:35: You know what, here’s Lund on the Firefly wiki.
57:58: This shooting script is unsourced, take it as you will. (Editor’s note: The fact that this is from “myths.com” doesn’t lend do any favors for its credibility. Lmao)
1:13:29: The return of the stunned silence, our third host.
1:14:54: The Great Train Robbery was also, by chance, Michael Crichton’s second directorial effort. Neat.

Firefly 1 – Serenity

Is Joss Whedon an auteur?

Those are the fateful lines that begin our journey into this cult favourite television show. Some might even say beloved. Will we agree with this premise? Only time will tell for sure, and at this moment we’ve only watched  single damn episode of the show so how the hell should I know? It’s Firefly episode 1: Serenity, not to be confused with the later concluding movie, also weirdly named Serenity.

Show-notes:
1:10: I had forgotten we watched Lexx at all, to be quite honest with you dear fan. But if you wanted to hear our “journey” into Lexx, check out the beginning of our descent into the depravity that is that series.
5:15: Browncoats*
6:30: Linking a Quora post to explain why Firefly ended so quickly is probably a bad idea, but it was this or ScreenRant and you already know all our thoughts on that.
9:51: Here’s Joss Whedon’s Wonder Woman script for all of you who were desperate to read it I guess. Special shout out to “To say she is beautiful is to almost miss the point. […] Her body is curvaceous, but taut as a drawn bow.” For being the most uncomfortable few lines of text I’ve read today.
10:53: The Nevers got extremely average reviews.
18:50: The “all I know is I must kill” meme actually is pretty funny with the image to go along with it.
22:45: The Bebop Beat is a Cowboy Bebop podcast that seems pretty new. I’ve never listened to it, but could be worth checking out.
24:30: And Spanish.
25:37: We talk a lot about Marinus in our Keys of Marinus revisted episode of Trust Your Doctor.
33:51: Kiyan elaborates on this absolutely correct opinion in our Fifty Shades episode of Triple Play.
54:15: Pacific Rim is a movie by Guillermo del Toro that’s apparently good but I’ve never seen it so I wouldn’t know. (Yeah, same here -Kiyan, 2021)
56:30: Kiyan elaborates on this absolutely correct opinion in our Alien: Resurrection episode of Triple Play.
1:00:29: Here’s an article on how Joss Whedon allegedly took joy in making female writers uncomfortable during writer’s room meetings.
1:03:57: Soylent Green is People!
1:21:50: Magnificent Seven is a definite and unabashed American remake of Seven Samurai.
1:25:20: Internet Movie Firearms Database is a surprisingly robust site.
1:26:53: Star Cops was the first show we watched for this podcast. Good times.
1:32:00: Just cause I’m curious, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny is a series of short animated episodes that were released over 2017 and 2018.
1:39:15: The original Twilight Zone started in 1959. The 1985 Twilight Zone is the second series.
1:40:50: Who the hell is Kwanseer? And what is his role in the Aladdin TV series? Stay tuned for more information.

Firefly 0 – Intro

So. Shall we start?

We’ve never really done one of these intro episodes before, but it was about time we actually announced the show we were going to watch… before we actually watch it. Well. At least before we release episodes on it. We’re watching Firefly! Yay! Or boo, I dunno, take your pick. Did you know Apple doesn’t like it when you try to set an episode number to 0? Who’d’ve thunk it.

Lexx 4 – Gigashadow

I’m giga-over this show at this point.

Speaking of over it, I really procrastinated on writing this little summary. Honestly even now I don’t know what I should say. So I’m kind of saying this, I guess. Not much more to say on the matter really, Lexx S1 is done and so are we. It’s Gigashadow, written by Paul Donovan, Jeffery Hirschfield and Lex Gigeroff and released on September 11, 1997.

Show-notes:
3:30: We watched Troll 2 for one of our podcasts, Triple Play.
6:04: If there’s one thing I’ve learned watching Lexx, it’s that everything changes.
9:26: S’mores are a thing that are typically cooked over a campfire and are deliciously unhealthy and are probably part of the reason so many people have diabetes.
14:54: If you’re interested in the Liberator, that means you’re probably also just as or vastly more interested in the show it’s from, Blake’s 7, which we did a podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast, on.
35:45: I was thinking of these worms that leech off of crickets and mayflies.
40:55: Pinocchio 3000 actually looks bonkers.
42:13: We actually watched the 2d animated special “Kung Fu Panda: Secret of the Furious Five” over on Triple Play, and not Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness.
43:13: We also watched the Bourne Identity tv movie on Triple Play.
1:07:16: Go and check out Trust Your Doctor while you wait for more Inevitable.

Lexx 3 – Eating Pattern

I have an eating pattern, it’s called eat at 9pm and never again.

So this morning I edited the podcast while eating cereal. So I guess you could say I had an eating pattern while editing eating pattern. Isn’t that wild how that kind of stuff works? I think it’s pretty cool but you never know, maybe the audience disagrees like they always seem to. It’s Eating Pattern, written by Paul Donovan, Jeffery Hirschfield and Lex Gigeroff and released on September 4, 1997.

Show-notes:
2:20: I’m not gonna put a link to that in the show notes. Lol.
4:47: Here’s that transcript of Eating Pattern, for the morbidly curious.
5:29: My personal favorite Doctor Who transcript site is Chakoteya.
5:52: Here’s the Lexxplorations site, which I’m going to leave here and then back away slowly.
7:39: Meatloaf, not to be confused with Meat Loaf.
11:49: Check out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast.
13:24: I’m going to bring Scorpio and the Liberator to you courtesy of the Blake’s 7 wiki.
29:41: Jackass: The Movie came out in 2002, coming right on the heels of the TV show, which aired from 2000 to 2002.
40:57: Kiyan is probably thinking about Sting being in Dune, rather than Rutger Hauer.
42:22: Zwölf apparently means “twelve” in German. Also einsatz can mean “mission” according to Wiktionary.
49:12: Google Translate tells me it’s Hindi. Here’s what the name actually was: विस्मयादिबोधक चिह्न.
52:17: Here’s the Horizon Blake’s 7 forum.

Lexx 2 – Super Nova

This week Kiyan drops millions of Lexx puns and I hate it.

While watching this all I could think of was that I would love it if a supernova just swallowed me whole. Like if I could just be absolved of my responsibility of watching this movie for this podcast. And the best way to do that is to just be absorbed by a black hole. It’s Super Nova, written by Pual Donovon, Jeffery Hirschfield and Lex Gigeroff and released on April 25, 1997.

Show-notes:
7:50: For more on the Borad and other Doctor Who characters, check out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast.
13:29:
Far be it from me to defend Lexx, but apparently lava can actually get hot enough to look white.
16:39: Listen to Triple Play when it comes back to hear Kiyan defend his opinion on Fifty Shades of Grey.
17:39: Brunis*
20:48:
The Mandalorian uses a digital wall powered by the Unreal Engine to generate realistic landscapes without a greenscreen or chroma key.
27:10: It’s actually a little disputed it Socrates actually said “the only true wisdom is knowing that I know nothing”, since it only appears in Plato’s account of his works, and there is not evidence he himself said it and that Plato didn’t just randomly add it.
30:04: I did not bleep them out in post.
35:28: Flat Stanley is actually an entire series, so go knock yourself out.
53:08: Yep, I was right about who Ilene was here.
59:25: If you’d like the try pronouncing it at home, it’s’ pronounced ‘Folkjokeopus‘. Also, here’s McGoohan’s Blues.
1:03:45: The concept of the selfie has long predated the word. Because they were self-portraits.
1:11:29: We still have a blog. Haven’t updated it in months now though lol.
1:11:52: Check out this sick video of Peter Parker being a jerk.
1:13:31: Check out our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
1:15:08: I don’t know how accurate it is, but forebears.io has a list of the most common names in the world.
