Triple Play

In this (currently a bit sporadic) podcast, Kiyan and Dylan bring their “expertise” in film and television into the world of movie trilogies. Each episode centers around a trilogy that the duo watched in one sitting, and features behind the scenes information, a brief summary of key plot points, and a discussion on how the movies worked as a trilogy.

Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, Ocean’s Thirteen

Well, at least I can read the movie and watch the book.

This month we watched something that’s been on my list for a long time. They’re pretty different from anything we’ve watched before actually, these are the first proper “heist” movies that we’ve watched for this podcast. We’ve run through quite a gamut of genres so it’s kind of cool to find one we haven’t found it. It’s Oceans Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen, directed by Steven Soderbergh and released in 2001, 2004, and 2007.

Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Well, here I go adopting communism again.

It’s been panned by fans and newcomers alike, it’s Triple Play! No, wait. It’s Indiana Jones. That’s right, I’m sorry. Who can really tell the difference with that reaction though? It’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, written by David Koepp and released on May 22, 2008.

Show-notes:

6:01 Never even heard of The Post, but at least it looks better than Ready Player One.
11:17 Here’s all the stuff David Koepp wrote.
12:08 And here’s all the stuff Harrison Ford has been in. Guess you don’t need to do much when you have all that Lucasfilm money.
18:00 According to the Indiana Jones wiki, it is Shia.
31:51 Possibly Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb.

Indiana Jones

Kind of like bring your kids to work day: bring your kids to cult day!

This is a classic 80’s trilogy, and if you’re wondering why we did it now, well Steven Spielberg has that movie coming out. You know, Ready Player One. And that was the only thing we could come up with in March to capitalize on. The only thing we wanted to capitalize on really. It’s Indiana Jones, released in 1981, 1984, and 1989.

Show-notes:

3:11 Raiders must have been an interesting movie to make.
7:11 Here’s the full transcript of the discussion. This thing is 90 pages long.
8:46 That would be Nevada Smith.
10:27 Check out some of the stuff they cut out of Raiders in this 1979 draft.
13:36 Read more about Raiders casting.
14:41 Patrick Wilson.
18:36 Yeah I guess I do know this theme.
18:53 All the Peru scenes in Raiders were done in Hawaii.
26:24 More about the “dark” times Spielberg and Lucas were going through before Temple of Doom.
27:48 And some people didn’t really like it.
40:20 This interview.
51:22 Pryde of the X-Men. I always forget about that Spider-Man voting thing at the beginning.

Also check out theraider.net, pretty good site for IJ info, and we used a lot of the info from here. Not sure if it’s all true though.

Insidious: The Last Key

Beep boop activate scare mode beep boop.

This month we covered the only thing that we really could for this movie trilogy. I’m being serious right now, there’s surprisingly, absolutely nothing else we could do for Insidious unless we watched something else that James Wan or Leigh Whannell has done. It’s Insidious: The Last Key, written by Leigh Whannell and released on January 5, 2018.

Show-notes:

0:47 Yup, still there.
1:42 Kwan Tak-hing portrayed famous martial artist Wong Fei-hung in over 70 movies, but I don’t think they were all part of the same franchise.
5:44 Superbad?
6:47 Reservoir Doigs is Quentin Tarantino’s first movie and it’s not great.
13:19 According to Nameslist.org, Imagen stands for Industrious Methodical Affectionate Good Emotional Nonconforming. Must be true.
14:50 Follow him on Twitter.
15:12 Pixels sounds really bad.
24:35 A Quiet Place actually looks like it could be good.
24:49 I seriously don’t care about movie reviews, either from fans or “critics,” but this 12% is pretty pathetic.
24:53 Congratulations Blumhouse, you’re finally there, now sit on your throne as the overlords of scare.
25:06 Does the Black Panther trailer belong in front of a horror movie? You decide.
25:15 Yet another one of those trailers that spoils most of the movie. At least Midnight Sun looks terrible so I have no desire to watch it anyway.
33:40 Try and name even one good superhero/comic book movie from the last decade. Go ahead. I guarantee you won’t be able to. And The New Mutants continues that trend.

Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, Insidious: Chapter 3

This is the greatest conclusion we’ve ever come to.

I think this is the first horror trilogy we’ve done. Well actually I don’t think, I know, I’m just thinking because, man we’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel for finding tenuous connections to movies coming out in the months these episodes come out. It’s Insidious 1 through 3, released in 2011, 2013, and 2015.

Show-notes:

3:33 Wan and Whannell talk about how they got started making movies.
4:53 This scene from Saw II. Watch at your own risk.
7:52 He says that and more in this interview.
9:30 Insidious 1 was made with just $5.
10:19 Jason Blum talks about all the low budget movies his company has made in recent years.
16:34 Joe Bishara talks soundtrack stuff. This is the guy who also played the demon in the first one.
19:11 Never even heard of this movie.
19:24 5 seconds of Google didn’t give me the answer, so I gave up.
21:42 Never met anyone who willingly calls themselves a hipster but apparently this guy does.
9:14 Patrick Wilson on Wan and if he’s coming back for Insidious 3 (he’s not, and he didn’t).
28:49 Some “interesting” stories about the making of Insidious 3 I guess. Pretty lame overall, just like the movie itself.
31:37 Trust Your Doctor is our Doctor Who podcast.
39:50 6 + an unofficial Japanese knockoff/sequel.

Other stuff:
Insidious 3 stuff
Insidious 2 and other James Wan stuff
How much Insidious 1 made (hint: a lot)
More of James Wan on Insidious 2

Star Wars: Clone Wars

Being stabbed hurts, from what I’ve heard.

This month we watched Star Wars: Clone Wars, where the clones like actually attack, you know? They should have called this Attack of the Clones, and renamed Episode II, I don’t know, “The Clones Exist.” Clone Wars was aired between November 7, 2003 and March 25, 2005.

Show-notes:

2:13 And a bunch of other stuff.
2:31 Only the good die young.
9:14 I was actually planning on becoming a Satanist until I saw this show.

Star Wars (the prequel trilogy)

If he’s the key I don’t want to see what the lock looks like.

This month we tortured ourselves with the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Unless you’re Kiyan, then you discovered a newfound appreciation for actual trash. This is George Lucas’ magnum opus. Or as close to it as he’s ever going to get. The prequel trilogy was released in 1999, 2002, and 2005, respectively.

Show-notes:

2:41 Background stuff about Star Wars. This also covers the lead-up to Episode III, the best of the prequel trilogy.
4:31 The making of Episode I full documentary. Now might be a good time to drop this other Episode I behind the scenes stuff. And while we’re at it here’s more. Heck, here’s seven archived pages of stuff from 1999.
6:56 Spottraining.
10:16 UNSOLICITED. Her name was Robin Gurland I guess.
15:00 FUTURE.
24:13 Still good.
25:55 Check out our other podcast, Dust your Doctor.
28:56 Episode II documentary.
35:48 yeah that’s right, the kid who played kid Anakin now has schizophrenia.

Other stuff:
Yoda vs. Dooku
Darth Vader costume
Kashyyk, however you spell it

Alien Resurrection

Stone, the womb from which man was born. I think.

Time to round out the original Alien quadrilogy with everybody’s favorite Alien movie, Alien Arrival. The 2016 one. Just kidding, I don’t think we’d survive that ordeal. It’s Alien: Resurrection written by Joss Whedon, directed by JeanPierre Jeunet and released on November 26, 1997.

Show-notes:

3:07 Hahahaha
15:04 Jayne is a girls’ name.
19:55 Hellboy from the Hellboy franchise.
23:39 Room?

Alien, Aliens, Alien 3

Don’t know how I did that, considering we set aside like 9 hours to watch these.

This month we delve into a science fiction classic. No not Star Wars. No not Back to the Future. No not… ok you get the point. It’s Alien, Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi horror classic. We also watched Aliens and Alien 3, because this is a trilogy podcast and we needed three movies. Yes we know there’s a fourth one, get over it.

Show-notes:

2:22 Here’s that concept art for Neil Blomkamp’s Alien 5.
0:48 Yeah. This rogue Geiger counter did all the work designing the Alien for them.
5:55 Oh boy, just what everybody wanted.
9:43 The Statement of Randolph Carter
12:28 The Alien and Sedition Acts were passed in 1798, so Dylan got two digits correct. Close enough.
13:08 Check out the Nostromo’s blueprints and some other “neat” stuff here.
14:24 These were the guys who made the chain mail for Lord of the Rings.
15:10 Don’t worry Yaphet, I believe you.
21:25 The chestbuster scene is pretty iconic.
24:08 A brief overview of the making and release of Aliens.
35:25 Neuromancer
39:06 Unfortunately the communist vs capitalism theme also fell apart when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.
44:40 The world’s most popular man, David Fincher.

Hercules and the Arabian Night

You know, just those damn trolls living under internet bridges.

Amazingly there’s barely anything expanded universe for Aladdin. In fact we had to go and dive into completely other properties just to find something to squeak out a 20 ish minute episode. It’s Hercules and the Arabian Night, written by Bill Motz and Bob Roth and aired February 10, 1999.

Show-notes:

0:48 See for yourself.
2:04 Firefely is a tv show created by Joss Whedon.
12:29 Here’s more about the non-Disney Icarus.
13:54 Limitless is a 2011 movie and 2015 tv show about a dude who unlocks his brain’s full capacity with a pill or some shit.
22:01 Basically no possible way that Thor: Ragnarok will be good.
