behind the scenes

Episode 20: Travis in a Tuxedo (Killer)

If Travis doesn’t wear a tuxedo in this show I’m rioting.

One of these two people is a killer. A silent killer, which if you think about it is really the only kind of killer they could be if they’re on an audio based podcast. Because they have to talk all the time, you know? Anyway, it’s Killer, written by Robert Holmes and aired on February 20, 1979.

Show-notes:

14:07 yeah I guess Gambril does look kind of like Art Garfunkel.
21:04 Check out our newest episode of Triple Play, our movie trilogy podcast. We discuss Ocean’s 11 and stuff.
30:19 Here’s the forum in case you want to join.
35:37 The movie is Space is the Place. Sun Ra was a jazz composer. The Egyptian god was just Ra.
36:55 Yeah, Neil Armstrong was from Ohio.

Episode 19: Walking Simulator (Trial)

You see Roj Blake standing in front of you, what do you do?

Chris Boucher is back. Well he never actually left, but he’s back, or something like that. Travis is back too, but he’s gone rogue now, much like Chris when you think about it. First he was doing Terry’s (Servalan’s) bidding, and now he’s going off and doing his own thing without that pesky overbearing boss. It’s Trial, written by Chris Boucher and aired on February 13, 1978.

Show-notes:

2:33 Statler and Waldorf are Muppets.
11:25 Rasputin played Tom Baker playing Rasputin the the 1971 Rasputin movie, Nicholas and Rasputin and Alexandra and Rasputin.
27:48 Vaster than Empires and More Slow is a story about some people and some plants doing some stuff somewhere.
28:24 Looks like there are a bunch of living planets in DC, but I guess Mogo is the main one.
28:49 Destroyer is a new comic.
28:59 The Neverending Story is one of the best books ever written. Don’t watch the movies though cause they suck.
38:25 Bondfinger is Bondfinger?

Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, Ocean’s Thirteen

Well, at least I can read the movie and watch the book.

This month we watched something that’s been on my list for a long time. They’re pretty different from anything we’ve watched before actually, these are the first proper “heist” movies that we’ve watched for this podcast. We’ve run through quite a gamut of genres so it’s kind of cool to find one we haven’t found it. It’s Oceans Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen, directed by Steven Soderbergh and released in 2001, 2004, and 2007.

Episode 18: BDSM America Ft. Sgt. Draino (Pressure Point)

This week on BDSM America… no I’m not finishing this thought.

This week is our first episode of Zenith that features three hosts rather than the usual two. Because we’ve somehow convinced some random fan to actually pull out a microphone and record with us. Yes, this week we are joined by the illustrious(?) Sgt. Draino for Pressure Point, written by Terry Nation and aired on February 6, 1979.

Show-notes:

16:22 Oddjob is a character from Goldfinger.

Episode 17: The Ever-Ambiguous They (Horizon)

No one ever claimed we weren’t ambiguous on this podcast, you know.

This show is getting increasingly stressful to edit because I continue to actually forget to do so. I always remember way late at night Monday evening. This is more behind the scenes in formation than you could have ever possibly wanted or desired, but there it is. This week it’s Horizon, written by Alan Prior and aired on January 20, 1979.

Show-notes:

6:33 Blake’s 7 in Character now has more episodes on Colin Baker and Dorian.
28:10 Making Blake’s 7 is a twitter account about the making of Blake’s 7.
30:46 The original Magnificent 7 is alright, but I couldn’t watch the new one for more than 5 minutes.

197: 2008 Was 10 Years Ago (The Fires of Pompeii)

Everything we talk about happened 10 years ago.

Donna Noble has been saved oh shit no wait that’s the wrong story. Spoilers, sweetie. No in this one Donna saves people, like 4 of them, she forces the Doctor to. Easy mistake to make, I just swapped it around. It’s Fires of Pompeii, written by James Moran and aired on April 12, 2008.

Show-notes:

2:18 Some good Greek and Roman fonts at dafont.com. I’m sure you can tell which is which.
10:19 It was Rome.

Episode 16: Same Universe According to Chris Boucher (Weapon)

We all know Chris is the end all be all on this argument.

Chris Boucher is still in control this week. Thankfully. It’s good to have a respite from Terry Nation right? I mean, the one episode alone was good but to be able to get two in a row (more!) is a fantastic little gift. It’s Weapon, written by Chris Boucher and aired on January 23, 1979.

Show-notes:

6:29 Lesley Judd shows you how to make a teleport bracelet in this Blue Peter segment.

Episode 15: Luke Skywalker Cosplay (Shadow)

Everyone in my family has the force or something I don’t remember the quote anymore.

Finally Terry gave up on writing stories for Blake’s 7. Only took him 14 damn episodes to finally hand the reigns over to someone else. Although arguably the reigns didn’t go very far, just like, one seat to the right. To Christ Boucher. It’s Shadow, written by Chris Boucher and aired on January 16, 1979.

Show-notes:

14:10 Logan’s Run was a novel at first, then it was adapted into a movie and a tv series that came out a year before Blake’s 7.
16:24 Blake’s 7 in Character is a new Blake’s 7 podcast.
17:53 Dark Matter is a tv series.

52:10 Benny’s 7.
53:34 Space Fall is another new Blake’s 7 podcast.
54:54 Not going to bother looking up which podcast actually said this, but Shake and Blake is probably the first Blake’s 7 podcast ever.

Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Well, here I go adopting communism again.

It’s been panned by fans and newcomers alike, it’s Triple Play! No, wait. It’s Indiana Jones. That’s right, I’m sorry. Who can really tell the difference with that reaction though? It’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, written by David Koepp and released on May 22, 2008.

Show-notes:

6:01 Never even heard of The Post, but at least it looks better than Ready Player One.
11:17 Here’s all the stuff David Koepp wrote.
12:08 And here’s all the stuff Harrison Ford has been in. Guess you don’t need to do much when you have all that Lucasfilm money.
18:00 According to the Indiana Jones wiki, it is Shia.
31:51 Possibly Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb.

Episode 14: Blake’s on a Plane (Redemption)

I’m tired of this monday to… wait I’ve used this before.

This week we move from Series A into Series B, which means we’re past a quarter way now. This are going to get pretty different around here, we’ve finally gotta Terry Nation out of the writer’s chair, just not yet. No, first we have to wipe out all possibility of backstory for the Liberator. It’s Redemption, written by Terry Nation and aired on January 9, 1979.

Show-notes:

13:21 What does God need with a starship? Heck if I know.
32:11 Another Star Trek thing, the Borg are cyborgs I guess. Possibly kind of like the Voord from Doctor Who. The more detailed Big Finish Voord I mean. Not the guys in wetsuits Voord from Key of Marinus.
40:40 Mostly Made Up Doctor Who Episode Guide is one of the best Doctor Who podcasts ever. Too bad I had to unsubscribe since they thought 42 was just ok.
44:48 If you somehow don’t know, Radio Free Skaro is probably the most popular/famous Doctor Who podcast out there.
44:57 Here’s the Suzan Farmer “tribute” thing.
45:41 Check out Triple Play, a podcast where we discuss movie trilogies.
47:07 Also check out Trust Your Doctor, our Doctor Who podcast.
