204: Bad Bad Wolf Wolf (Turn Left)

Anytime now. We’ll let Rose go. Any day. Just. Right there.

We used to have a grasshopper in our recording studio but we’ve recorded so many different places now that I don’t think the grasshopper has shown up many times in the past year. I was going to make a joke about recording this podcast with grasshoppers on our back but it wouldn’t really make sense if the grasshoppers can’t be heard. It’s Turn Left, written by Russell T. Davies and aired on June 21, 2008.

Show-notes:

8:20 It was Myanmar
18:23 Here’s the entire story. I bet that guy’s still wondering how that shrimp fried rice would’ve tasted.
22:22 I guess I was way off cause London is actually the 13th most populated capital.
25:28 British succession is way too complicated to explain in a sentence or two, so read about it on Wikipedia if you’re curious.

Ocean’s 11 (1960)

This podcast has really taken a dive if you know what I mean.

This week we kind of mildly tortured ourself with the original Ocean’s 11. Like, the one that was released in 1960. Not the new one, the good one, the Steven Soderbergh one. We watched the old one, the Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin/Sammy Davis Jr. one. It’s Ocean’s 11, released on August 10, 1960.

Show-notes:

2:28 Spyros was played by Akim Tamiroff.
3:13 Check out our Blake’s 7 podcast Zenith if you want.
4:22 Here’s the title sequence. It is pretty cool even if I don’t care for the soundtrack.
25:30 Bamboozled.
32:01 Looks like there are a couple disputed origins for the “Rat Pack” name. You can decide if they’re “good reasons” or not.

Episode 23: Unlimited Travis (Voice from the Past)

Kind of like unlimited Gan but way more dangerous and unhinged.

This week somebody other than Christ Boucher or Terry Nation titled the script, because it’s got like 4 words. Thats 3 words more than the average on this show, so let’s give Blake’s 7 a big round of applause. It’s Voice from the Past, written by Roger Parkes, and aired on March 13, 1979.

Show-notes:

0:57 Making Blake’s 7 is a Twitter account about the making of Blake’s 7.
1:24 Flight Through Entirety is a Doctor Who podcast. They recorded Eric Saward’s scrapped ending for Trial of a Time Lord about a year ago.
6:12 Dark Star. It actually came out in 1974 and was made by USC students.
7:00 Portal is a video game.
8:00 Check out our Doctor Who podcast Trust Your Doctor for “riveting” Doctor Who discussion that sets a new standard for Doctor Who podcasts.
9:03 Tay was Microsoft’s racist Twitter bot.
10:27 Roko’s Basilisk.
20:55 Biofeedback.
35:57 Foundation is a book series by Isaac Asimov.
38:45 Blinky Bill is apparently an Australian classic kids’ book. I’ve been watching the 90s cartoon version lately.
47:40 Here’s the site. Lot of other cool Blake’s 7 stuff on here too. I’m gonna check this out more in depth when I get the chance.
59:42 The Old Doctor Who Show is another Doctor Who podcast. They also make a bunch of gifs from classic DW episodes and post them on Twitter.

203: Electric K. Ant (Midnight)

So, Mr. Ant, what qualifies you for this position?

This is one of the best Doctor Who stories of all time according to Dylan, and a very good one according to Kiyan, and basically all of fandom really. Most people like this, so if you don’t you’re obviously wrong. Just flat out wrong, that’s the nature of the game unfortunately. It’s Midnight, written by Russell T. Davies and aired on June 14, 2008.

Show-notes:

3:02 Sapphires are actually a type of corundum and is slightly softer than diamond.
5:26 I completely forgot Independence Day: Resurgence existed. Pretty sure most of the world has forgotten about it too.
6:11 Rio is about some bird or something.
8:22 Turns out a klick is just a kilometer.
11:15 Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti.
15:14 Hereditary might actually be scary.
16:09 Check out Zenith, our Blake’s 7 podcast.

Episode 22: Lost The Game (Countdown)

How long has it been since I last lost The Game?

Guess who’s back? Back again. Terry’s back. Back again. It’s Terry Nation returning to write for the show once again, with a script he probably actually turned in on time for once. It’s Countdown, written by Terry Nation and aired on March 6, 1979.

Show-notes:

0:50 Space Fall and Blake’s 7 in Character are two other Blake’s 7 podcasts.
3:36 Alien Resurrection is the Alien movie we got but didn’t deserve. We discussed in on episode 14.5 of our movie trilogy podcast Triple Play.
4:05 We also talk about Doctor who every week on Trust Your Doctor. Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead is our newest episode as of right now.
33:08 Unlike underwater basket weaving, underwater welding pays a lot.
38:59 The Game is The Game.

202: Books Suck (Silence in the Library & Forest of the Dead)

Unlike books, however, River is actually useful.

Every once in a while we deserve to take a digression, I think. A nice little trip down the yellow brick road so to speak. Of course, it just so happens that this digression is all of the episode, but you know, whatever! It’s Silence in the Library & Forest of the Dead, written by Steven Moffat and aired on May 31 and June 7, 2008.

Show-notes:

12:36 David Bowie had liver cancer.
32:51 St. Elsewhere is a medical tv series.
48:04 Lingthusiasm is a linguistics podcast.
49:35 The Night is Short, Walk on Girl is a Japanese animated movie.
1:00:44 The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe is a 2016 novella by Kij Johnson.
1:04:49 We have a Blake’s 7 podcast called Zenith. It’s alright I guess.

Episode 21: Eyepatch Fetish (Hostage)

Don’t you get any ideas, Hollywood.

This week’s episode is a doozy. It’s a weird one, it’s kind of uncomfortable, and we were really weird and woozy because it was midnight when we started recording this. Which means it’s one of the funniest episodes we’ve recorded. Maybe. It’s Hostage, written by Allan Prior and aired on February 27, 1979.

Show-notes:

2:59 Black Mirror is a tv series.
8:32 This isn’t the original site I found it on, but this site also has the Vila’s Emails fanfic.
13:09 Considering Kevin Stoney has 187 acting credits, I’d say he was in a lot.
23:13 Tron was an early example of computer animation in movies.
25:31 Here’s the interview with Sally Knyvette. This is also the same one where she talks about her name.
28:51 The Expanse is the best sci-fi show on television. You heard it here first.
28:59 Killjoys is pretty fun. You heard it here first.
30:00 Oswald was some lucky rabbit or something. Hell if I know.

201: The Wasp in the Study with the Lead Pipe (The Unicorn and the Wasp)

Look out! A Wasp!

At the end of this recording session, around 1 in the morning, after recording Zenith, we both walked to our cars. We looked at each other, dead inside, dead on the outside. Just dead all around. “Never again.” It’s The Unicorn and the Wasp, written by Gareth Roberts and aired on May 17, 2008.

Show-notes:

2:36 Cluedo is the original name. According to Wikipedia, it’s a play on the words “clue” and “ludo” which means “I play” in Latin. It was changed to Clue in North America because over here the traditional game of Ludo is known as Parcheesi, so most people wouldn’t get the reference.
4:30 Unicron.
5:12 Ego the Living Planet is a sentient planet from Marvel. I don’t read comics and I try to stay away from comic book movies but I think this guy was in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2.
5:25 We have a Blake’s 7 podcast called Zenith. It’s alright.
14:57 The Last Man wasn’t Mary Shelley’s second book. I’ve never read this thing at apparently it was mostly ignored in favor of Frankenstein, but it’s starting to get a lot more attention recently.
19:51 According to these bee and wasp articles, wasps can’t grow their stingers back.
21:24 This is what wasp hives look like. Not as cool as bee hives. Another category wasps completely fail in when put up against bees.
23:52 Here’s how you make a Harvey Wallbanger.
32:53 It was actually a mental disability basketball team, but same deal.Spain confirmed for huge cheaters. (Couldn’t find the article.)
34:05 Arsene Lupin is just some guy.

Episode 20: Travis in a Tuxedo (Killer)

If Travis doesn’t wear a tuxedo in this show I’m rioting.

One of these two people is a killer. A silent killer, which if you think about it is really the only kind of killer they could be if they’re on an audio based podcast. Because they have to talk all the time, you know? Anyway, it’s Killer, written by Robert Holmes and aired on February 20, 1979.

Show-notes:

14:07 yeah I guess Gambril does look kind of like Art Garfunkel.
21:04 Check out our newest episode of Triple Play, our movie trilogy podcast. We discuss Ocean’s 11 and stuff.
30:19 Here’s the forum in case you want to join.
35:37 The movie is Space is the Place. Sun Ra was a jazz composer. The Egyptian god was just Ra.
36:55 Yeah, Neil Armstrong was from Ohio.

200: Made It To 200 (The Doctor’s Daughter)

I was finally there, 200 episodes and still no one cares.

Turns out both Kiyan and Dylan have daughters, I mean, who would have guessed that? They have their own podcast, it’s called “She’s Your Doctor” or something like that. You can tell I’m making this up as I go along really. It’s The Doctor’s Daughter, written by Stephen Greenhorn and aired on May 10, 2008.

Show-notes:

0:41 Harry Melling, who played Harry Potter’s annoying cousin, is Patrick Troughton’s grandson.
1:38 Blue Box 250 is a huge collaborative special that Blue Box podcast did for their 250th episode. We were on it but I honestly forgot what we talked about.
19:36 Nice bog there.
23:20 Am I supposed to like this for the early 2000s CG?
32:10 You tell me.
