116: Sass of Rassilon (State of Decay)

“I’m a Time Lord bro. Back off. BACK OFF.” – Sassy Rassilon

This week Kiyan and Dylan do not make it to Gallifrey yet, however much this title may imply that they did. Instead they fail to even leave E-Space. It’s the second story of the E-Space trilogy this week, State of Decay. It was written by Terrance Dicks and aired in November and December of 1980.

Show-notes

10:02 Purple was traditionally associated with nobility in a number of ancient cultures (and still is today).
15:16 You’ve probably already seen the new Star Wars trailer, but go ahead and watch it again. Or watch it for the first time if you haven’t seen it. It was pretty good. Or not. I dunno.
27:29 Punch cards were used to program computers and to store information back in the stone age. We’ve never seen the Doctor use his before and we’ll probably never see it again.
31:20 Here’s a pretty extensive list of vampire weaknesses from various mythologies and media (including Count Chocula).

105: Funny for All the Wrong Reasons (The Power of Kroll)

Is anything ever funny for the right reasons?

This week Kiyan and Dylan face the roughly 4×21 minute ritual of Kroll. It’s really rather simple, you sit through the 4 episode The Power of Kroll serial, take a few notes, and then record a podcast about it. The serial was written by Robert Holmes and aired in December of 1978 and January of 1979.

This is the kind of alarm clock/timer that Kiyan and Dylan were referring to, in case you were wondering.

102: Behind a Wall of Incomprehensible Nonsense (The Pirate Planet)

I’m not entirely certain what the title means either.

This week Kiyan and Dylan become acquainted with one of the more well known Doctor Who writers. Or, to be more specific, one of the more well known Doctor Who writers, outside of the Doctor Who fan circle. Yes, it’s The Pirate Planet, written by Douglas Adams and aired in September and October of 1978.

99: The Seedy Underbelly of Cave Life (Underworld)

Hey, hey man. You got a map? I can give you 5 talmars. No, they’re not fake. I swear.

How far we’ve fallen. After struggling through 4 episodes of total non-content, Kiyan and Dylan meet to try and explain precisely what happened. Maybe they succeeded, maybe they didn’t. But if you want to check for yourself, just go watch Underworld, written by Bob Baker and David Martin. It aired in January of 1978.

24: This Series is Built on Incompetent Guards (The Ark)

This week’s serial was far superior to last week’s.

Kiyan and Dylan watch The Ark this week, a serial that renewed their hopes for the future of Doctor Who after The Massacre of St. Bartholomew’s Eve. It was aired in March of 1966 and was written by Paul Erickson and Lesley Scott. This episode also features discussions on the relationship between this episode and some of the reboot, so very minor spoilers for 9th and 10th doctor episodes here.

9: Tegana is a Fly (Planet of Giants)

Kiyan and Dylan have entered Season 2.

This week Kiyan and Dylan watched Planet of the Giants, the first serial of season 2. The serial aired in October and November of 1964 and was written by Louis Marks. Being only 3 episodes long, it did not make much room for talking. Next up is The Dalek Invasion of Earth.
