Sapphire and Steel 6 – Assignment 6

In terms of “where are they now?” retrospectives, at least the S&S one will be really easy.

Kiyan and I have been trapped in a recording studio for all eternity as of the end of this serial. You may be deceived into thinking that before today we had already been stuck in a recording studio all day, which wouldn’t be so far from the truth given the current pandemic. But now it’s official and can never be revoked, new content every week until we die. It’s Assignment 6, written by P.J. Hammond and aired between August 19th and 31st, 1982.

Show-notes:

9:33: Check out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who Podcast. We’re not on Torchwood yet, but we will be in like 4 days (28 June 2020).
10:47: I guess we both forgot that we had pretty much this exact conversation about Silver and Lead a few episodes ago, lol.
17:13: Don’t listen to what I’m about to say, but do listen to our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
33:12: Of course there are Sapphire & Steel fanfics. Here they are, courtesy of fanfiction.net and AO3.
58:07: Here’s the full Counting Out Time documentary.

Sapphire and Steel 5 – Assignment 5

I forgot my name again too. I can’t remember if I was Kiyan or Dylan.

We’ve trapped ourselves in an old-timey estate house in order to experience this episode to its fullest. We’re actually not sure who else is locked in here with us, I didn’t check to see if the property was vacated before we decided to record in here. I can hear a weird stone statue mouthing off in the basement so that’s pretty weird. It’s Assignment 5, written by Don Houghton and Anthony Read and aired between August 11th and 26th, 1981.

Show-notes:

1:27: Check out our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, if you want to listen to us talk about Doctor Who.
30:56: Ok, so apparently ley lines are a way bigger irl deal than I thought they were. I found a few super legit sites like this one and this one that discuss birds and other animals moving and migrating across ley lines. Pretty interesting reads if nothing else.
33:07: I did a little googling about this and didn’t really find anything on it, but I did find this article about what happens when bacteria get viruses. So that’s pretty interesting.
48:12: Yes, apparently bronze does have copper in it.
1:08:26: Check out Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast, our Blake’s 7 Podcast. Also, the station that St. Clinton originally watched Blake’s 7 on was KTEH (now called KQEH). This station has shown a lot of British sci-fi in the San Francisco Bay Area over the years.

Sapphire and Steel 4 – Assignment 4 ft. 50dw50

Alternate title: Sapphire and Stalin

Kiyan and Dylan are like kind of really lame versions of the elementals. Which I bring up because that would explain why all of our guests are way cooler than us. Just like in this episode when we theorize that S&S are the outcasts who constantly fail, that would be us. And then the guests like Lead and Silver who are super suave and cool, that would be Keith and John. Damn. It’s Assignment 4, written by PJ Hammond and aired between January 27th and February 5th, 1981.

Show-notes:

2:11: Check out our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast. Here’s the specific episode that Keith was on.
7:15: Here’s the Anorak Zone’s Sapphire and Steel section. Really hope they finish this at some point.
21:51: Ghostbusters
25:48: If you want to hear us podcast about Blake’s 7, check out our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
28:27: Paul Darrow had his legs amputated because of an aortic aneurysm.
34:19: We watched Chuck for Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast, our movie trilogy podcast. Here’s the specific episode where we watched Chuck.

Sapphire and Steel 3 – Assignment 3 ft. Making Blake’s 7

Tune in this week to find out how to pronounce Russell Wooten.

Tune in this week to also find out how much of Russell Wooten is too much Russell Wooten. Turns out all three of us have a really different point of view on this really really important topic. It’s Assignment 3, written by PJ Hammond and aired between January 5th and 22nd, 1981.

Show-notes:

18:20: Here are a few articles about storing old comic book storage and preservation.
38:38: Yes, Emmerdale (Farm) was produced by Yorkshire Television.
45:16: According to this article, pretty much everything on Yahoo Groups is now gone forever. 🙁
1:40:24: Lady Gaga’s meat dress has its own Wikipedia page.
1:45:41: Victor Victoria is pretty highly rated on Rotten Tomatoes. Not that that means anything.
1:55:20: If you’re reading this, you probably already know about the Making Blake’s 7 twitter account. But if you somehow don’t, here’s the Making Blake’s 7 twitter account.

Sapphire and Steel 2 – Assignment 2

Look I’m not saying this could have been 2 serials but I’m not not saying that either.

Honestly I’m kind of glad we started with the 8 parter right off the bat. In general 8 parts back in classic Who days was the “max” we’d watch in one week. Anything above (like the 10 part The War Games or 12 part The Dalek’s Master Plan) we split over two weeks. Kind of almost wonder if we should have done that here, maybe we would have given it a more fair shake. It’s Assignment 2, written by PJ Hammond and aired between July 31st and November 8th, 1979.

Show-notes:

4:10: Check out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast.
9:30: I’m guessing most people listening to this won’t know what CatDog and Rocko’s Modern Life are, so here are some wikipedia links for ya.
23:35: Yep, it was Remembrance Day.

Sapphire and Steel 1 – Assignment 1

“It’s pretty clear” – Kiyan, about halfway through this episode.

It’s the start of the third season of Inevitable, which is massively increasing our season count already. Two was a record to begin with, and now three is the record, can you believe it? And soon in like 8 weeks it’ll be broken yet again. It’s Assignment 1, written by PJ Hammond and aired between July 10th and 26th, 1979.

Show-notes:

3:03: HAHAHAHAHAHA *sweats*
6:23: Check out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who podcast.
1:08:10: Bringing Up Baby was released in 1938.
1:23:07: Here’s the intro to Callan. It is pretty ominous, but somehow the way Dylan described it I thought there wouldn’t be any music.
1:24:42: We’re still approaching Torchwood. We’ll be starting it on Trust Your Doctor in a month or two.
1:28:51: Apparently Find a Grave is a thing.
1:33:36: Here’s Eurovision 1966’s “A Man Without Love,” composed by Cyril Ornadel.
