Triple Play

In this (currently a bit sporadic) podcast, Kiyan and Dylan bring their “expertise” in film and television into the world of movie trilogies. Each episode centers around a trilogy that the duo watched in one sitting, and features behind the scenes information, a brief summary of key plot points, and a discussion on how the movies worked as a trilogy.

Fifty Shades of Grey

For some reason I never started this draft beforehand.

Normally I start a draft for each of these episodes to store all my sources in. And for some reason I just… didn’t for this trilogy. I’m not really sure why. I know I had a bunch of links. I know I put them somewhere. Maybe that got lost somewhere along the way idk. Well whatever. It’s Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels.

Show-notes:
6:44:
Masters of the Universe is a He-Man series. Not to be confused with the fanfiction 50 shades is based on, Master of the Universe (singular).
9:49:
Narrator: He did not end up reading them.
16:27:
Here’s a short little video where Sam Taylor-Johnson talks about EL James and why she doesn’t return for the future movies.
18:06:
Persona is a movie from 1966, directed by Swiss American director Ingmar Bergman.
41:15:
Here you go, The Guardian reported on Niall Leonard writing the screenplay for the 50 shades sequels.
43:10:
The average age of Hollywood directors is 45, apparently. ~10% of them are over the age of 60.
1:03:14:
I actually tried to find this exact statistic and got way more articles about how to get out of an abusive relationship rather than statistics on them, so that was neat.

The Dark Knight

Yes, we did watch these great masterpieces of cinema history.

So this episode is late because guess what? I went into my little folder, with all of this season recorded, and edited “Episode 4.3”. Seems correct, right? Turns out I had misnumbered the episodes, and so I actually edited episode 4 of this season, that is, the next episode after this (50 Shades of Grey). Anyway, this episode is a week late and it’s obviously worth the wait. It’s Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Show-notes:
10:30: Check out this in-depth look into the the design of Gotham and its Chicagoesque roots and real filming locations.
12:06: Christopher Nolan was interviewed by the Director’s Guild of America, and in that interview, he talks about his preference for practical effects as well as other aspects of the filmmaking process.
15:22: I had a really good source for this but the link is dead now. So you’ll have to make do with this How Stuff Works article.
16:30: Yes, this is a real thing. The first speeding ticket was given for someone going 8 MPH in a 2 MPH zone.
21:09: The pronunciation of Ra’s Al Ghul comes down to whether you prefer the Arabic (Rahz) or Hebrew (Raysh) pronunciations.
22:32: Listen to our Taken episode to hear this snafu in real time.
32:42: Check out our episode on The Predator, or even the original Predator trilogy.
36:06: We actually don’t know any more than when we recorded this because the Flash movie got delayed all to hell. All we know is that Michael Keaton confirmed he was in it.< And we have some set photos.
37:59: Here’s some details on the Batpod and the insane driving skills it required.
43:21: For some reason I decided to joker laugh in the background, dunno why I did this.
57:02: UCSC, a pretty legitimate source, says that Dickens was not paid by the word, and was actaully paid by chapter/installment. Case closed I guess.
58:53: Here, read these Madame Defarge influences for yourself, completely unsourced.
1:05:40: Tom Hardy did an interview with The Vulture where he talked about his inspiration for the voice.
1:09:52: Look I even have an official source to back me up, the International Atomic Energy Agency.
1:12:08: Johnathon Nolan learned physics to write Interstellar. Here, he talks about it with famous physicist that I’ve met Kip Thorne.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

“Kill me now” – Me, apparently 6 months ago.

Honestly, in hindsight, I have absolutely no reasonable clue as to why we covered this trilogy. Literally none at all. But at some point we decided, hey, let’s sit down and watch Beverly Hills Chihuahua and that’s gonna be a good time. So we did, we say down and we watched the movies, and reader, it was not a good time. It was an acid trip through a land of sheer discrimination and horrifying cgi.

Show-notes:
4:30: Here’s some information on 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Prisoner, because it’s interesting. Yeah I just linked Wikipedia. What are you gonna do about it? Also, check out Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast, on which we watched and discussed The Prisoner (1967 and 2009).
8:14: Air Buddies was extremely successful. Here, American Kennel Club talks about it a bit.
10:01: Tippet Studios actually still exists, and has taken on much better projects than Beverly Hills Chihuahua, namely things like The Mandalorian and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
10:16: Here’s an article with some pictures of Heitor Pereira recording the score to Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
11:46: Dalmatians are a notoriously difficult breed to take care of, so it was quite concerning that 101 Dalmatians sparked “dalmatian fever”.
17:11: I couldn’t find this video because every search term I could think of to find it gave me articles and videos about kid celebrities. Great.
31:28: I didn’t actually record the link of the review that I’m pulling this quote from sadly, and I’m probably not going to be able to find it now.
43:00: Here’s that mom blogger who attended a “behind the scenes” even of BHC 3 and asked questions to the dogs.
44:45: If you’ve never heard the story of the “no brown M&M’s”, allow me to enlighten you.
57:03: Amazingly, somebody actually downloaded the pilot to the animated tv show, so here, go watch it for yourself.

Mad Max

Don’t you get it? He’s MAD!

We start off season 4 of Triple Play off with a quite extensive discussion about the merits of Australian Cinema. We also completely change the format. That’s right, we’ve regenerated. Everything is different, and nothing is the same. Can you believe it? I can believe it. For this new era of Triple Play we’re starting off strong, with Mad Max, Mad Max: Road Warrior and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

Show-notes:
6:00: Check out all our other podcasts: Inevitable, Trust Your Doctor, and Zenith.
7:19: Tina Turner’s We Don’t Need Another Hero from Beyond Thunderdome.
11:36: Here is the link to that massive dissertation on the birth and rise of Australian Cinema.
16:43: I don’t live with this guy anymore. The passage of time between recording and release is weird.
20:05: Raising Kane has been the subject of controversy for years but it’s commonly accepted to be debunked.
23:49: If this episode was going to have a title it would be “Group of Amateurs Gets Together, Produces Garbage”.
25:25: Mel Gibson is an absolute lunatic.
27:45: Just go watch Allen v. Farrow and get the whole story and decide for yourself.
45:35: Here’s some information on Dog, dog.
46:12: I looked for 10 seconds and couldn’t find anything on the stunt show so “not well documented” seems to be accurate.
53:58: Read more about the legacy and influence of Mad Max in popular culture.
1:00:00: You can find out more about this wild stunt and others over here in this article and video.
1:03:00: Here’s where I got that quote from, for those who wanna read even more insanity. And read about the bar brawl they got into over here at BBC America.
1:05:28: Here’s Screenrant’s really questionable Mad Max article.
1:06:45: You thought I was lying when I said this behind-the-scenes documentary was fourty minutes long.

Qatsi

If we could have made this episode a tone poem we would have.

The audio quality in this episode is a little worse than normal because it was recorded quite early in quarantine (nearly a year before release) before we had figured out how to properly record these things via skype. Because of that Kiyan’s audio sounds a bit scratchy. Sorry about that. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t make it a visual poem, since maybe the visuals could distract you from the audio. Alas. What a kind of shit way to end the season of Triple Play. It’s Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi.

Show-notes:

12:23: Archdaily says Kowloon Walled City was 33,000 people on 2 hectares (215,278 square feet) of land.
17:53: Our Matrix episode from (oh god) 2016.
23:57: Our Godfather episode from (oh god) 2020. Just as we did here, we pronounce Coppola wrong for this entire episodes. Hell yeah. And by hell yeah, I mean damn.
29:26: The BBC explains why Prince changed his name to a symbol.
37:16: The Four Corners are where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona meet.
53:00: Yeah so apparently Reggio directed this music video.

Robocop

Dead or alive you’re coming with us.

So this time we decided to watch an action movie that turns out to have actually quite complex societal implications. We also watched two other pieces of crap, so it wasn’t really just the one movie. But we did watch that movie. Did you know Paul Verhoeven responded to me on twitter? It was just Paul F. Verhoeven and not the Paul Verhoeven who directed this movie. But same thing. It’s Robocop 1, 2, and 3.

xXx

No not that kind of xXx.

I used to be an extreme sportsman. Did you know that? Yeah it’s true, I used to do extreme podcast editing. One time we were releasing an episode of Trust Your Doctor but I Was busy skydiving, so while skydiving I took my laptop and edited while skydiving. Set a new record for highest podcast episode edited. I also set a record for fastest speed attained by someone actively editing a podcast. Yeah that was me. It’s xXx, xXx: State of the union, and xXx: The Return of Xander Cage

Cars

Remember how All-Star became a meme? So did Life is a Highway.

When I saw the first movie in theatres I was in 4th grade. I know that I’m sort of in way giving away how old I ma, but hey. And then I actually saw the second one in theatres too. The third Cars movie was one of the only Pixar movies that I’ve not seen in theatres since The Incredibles (I know). Not that it really looks like I’ll be seeing any more in theatres any time soon. Alas, such is life right? It’s Cars 1, 2 and 3.

Show-notes:

1:20: Check out Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast, our classic sci-fi podcast.
6:28: John Lasseter directed both A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2.
31:46: Allmusic has a short but detailed biography on Larry the Cable Guy. Apprently he was never actually a cable guy. Go figure.
36:29: Our episode on Once Upon a Time in the West/America and Duck, You Sucker.
36:53: Our episode on Toy Story.
37:37: Our episode on Despicable Me.

Taken

Taken’s first moment of relevance since 2008.

Ok so here’s where the schedule for this season gets really crazy because for some reason we had to find the least logical way to record these episodes. Yeah. But you know, given the current status of the world, I would actually really like someone to just… take me away. Like taken style, honestly would probably be better than the world we’re living in right now. I’ll be waiting for Liam Neeson to come and save me. It’s Taken, Taken 2 and Taken 3.

The Godfather

It’s Ca-POLE-ah and not COP-a-la.

We recorded this in January of 2020 which means basically all of the cultural references are outdated. Also just listen to how optimistic we sound! This was also, fun fact, one of the very last episode we recorded both in person and in the old office we used to record in as we no longer have access to it. So this is quite a monumental episode. It’s The Godfather saga, Francis Ford Coppola’s magnum opus.
