303: Complementary Desert Eagle (Ghost Machine)

Not to be confused with Ghost IN The Machine.

If I had a ghost machine, I’d open that puppy up when I got into my apartment to find out if someone died in here. I might not want to actually know that, actually. Can you imagine if Gwen took the machine home, fired it up, and then boom just a straight montage of 6 murders happening in her home? The trauma that would induce. It’s Ghost Machine, written by Helen Raynor and aired on October 29, 2006.

The Prisoner 2 – The Chimes of Big Ben

I’m pretty sure Kiyan has actually heard the chimes of Big Ben…

Is Big Ben the only famous clock tower in the world? This is a strange thought I just had, while sitting here, trying to come up with a description for this episode. Googling ‘famous clock towers’ gave me a lots of clock towers after “Big Ben” as the first result, and I recognize none of them. So I guess I just proved that Big Ben is the only famous clock tower. It’s The Chimes of Big Ben, written by  Vincent Tilsley and aired on October 6, 1987.

Show-notes:

9:13: No. 6 uses a triquetrum in the alternate version of this episode.

302: The Seven Sins of Torchwood (Day One)

And the secret 0th sin: existence.

The name of this story evokes strong memories of… something. Another story or tv show or movie and I just can’t really place what it is. I seriously feel like I watched something called Day One once upon a time and I genuinely cannot remember what the heck it was. That’s so weird. It’s Day One, written by Chris Chibnall and aired on October 22, 2006.

Show-notes:
4:27: You’re welcome for this masterpiece of movie musical history. My personal favourite part is 1:19, when a dancer launches a bowling ball sideways accidentally and the shot immediately cuts, presumably to avoid showing the carnage that caused.
8:40: Every time.
16:14: If you want to listen us talk about classic sci-fi shows like Sapphire & Steel or The Prisoner, check out our classic sci-fi podcast, Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast.

56:50: Here’s the trailer for Vampire Diary. Y’know, I kind of miss the edginess of the mid 00s.
58:00: Yeah, I was completely wrong here. Twilight was never a Harry Potter fanfic. Dylan was right. It was 50 Shades that started as a Twilight fanfic.

The Prisoner 1 – Arrival

Who is number 1? We are number 1! *music cue*

Can you believe that we’ve made it to season 4? Speaking of which, like I said last week, Kiyan and I have been trapped in a personal podcasting hellscape. It just turns out that it’s a village populated by dozens of hundreds of more successful podcasts than ours. We don’t have names here, but I’ve been looking to see if I can find Sapphire and Steel anywhere in case they made it to this trap instead of the other one. It’s Arrival, written by George Markstein and David Tomblin and aired on September 29, 1987.

Show-notes:

4:31: We go these dates wrong. It should be 1960 and 1963.
6:41: Here’s the Reddit community for The Prisoner. And here’s the specific post we talked about.
8:55: The Prisoner: A Complete Production Guide came out in 2007. Here’s CST Online, the site TV analysis/studies site we were talking about, btw. (Blog posts by Pixley below.)
18:45: Here’s the episode order chart on Wikipedia.
19:44: If you want to listen to us talk about Blake’s 7 for some reason, check out our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
20:09: Six of One is still active apparently. Their site is super old looking, but still being updated.
26:27: Here’s where you can listen to ITC Entertained the World, and they have two more episodes than they did when we recorded this (for a grand total of 5)!
31:29: Here’s Ron Grainer’s arrangement of the Doctor Who theme. Imagine this being played over some of the early Doctor Who intros, lol.
45:59: If you want to listen to us talk about Doctor Who (and now Torchwood!), check out our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast.
1:01:54: Here’s Iron Maiden performing The Prisoner live. The Prisoner in Popular Culture page on Wikipedia is also worth a skim if you have a minute.
1:19:07: Behold: a chumbley in all its 1960s BBC budget alien glory.

301: A Christian Reading of Torchwood (Everything Changes)

I’m probably the worst person to do this kind of reading honestly.

The title of this weeks episode of Torchwood is surprisingly apt for the change in the show that we’re also going to experience. Which is why Kiyan was able to so expertly make that pun last week about it. Well not much else to say besides that. It’s Everything Changes, written by Russell T. Davies and aired on October 22, 2006.

Show-notes:

8:40: If you want to listen to us talk about Blake’s 7, check out our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
9:41: And if you want to listen to us talk about old shows that aren’t Doctor Who or Blake’s 7, check out our classic sci-fi podcast, Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast.
19:04: OR if you want to listen to us talk about movie trilogies, check out our movie trilogy podcast, Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast.
42:50: All of this is wrong. Cardiff Bay technically is in a river, but if you look on a map, it’s basically right where the river opens up into the sea. So it’s basically the sea. My bad.
50:50: Apparently pterosaurs are the the biggest things ever to fly through the skies lol.
1:29:29: Here’s the cover of The Lives of Captain Jack. Pretty great.

Sapphire and Steel 6 – Assignment 6

In terms of “where are they now?” retrospectives, at least the S&S one will be really easy.

Kiyan and I have been trapped in a recording studio for all eternity as of the end of this serial. You may be deceived into thinking that before today we had already been stuck in a recording studio all day, which wouldn’t be so far from the truth given the current pandemic. But now it’s official and can never be revoked, new content every week until we die. It’s Assignment 6, written by P.J. Hammond and aired between August 19th and 31st, 1982.

Show-notes:

9:33: Check out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, our Doctor Who Podcast. We’re not on Torchwood yet, but we will be in like 4 days (28 June 2020).
10:47: I guess we both forgot that we had pretty much this exact conversation about Silver and Lead a few episodes ago, lol.
17:13: Don’t listen to what I’m about to say, but do listen to our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
33:12: Of course there are Sapphire & Steel fanfics. Here they are, courtesy of fanfiction.net and AO3.
58:07: Here’s the full Counting Out Time documentary.

Redux 7: Bondage Spiderwebs (Time and the Rani)

I only like bondage anthills personally.

So we’ve come to the end of our little journey, which means it’s time to jump back into the late 2000’s for some quality early 21st century television. But before that, we have to suffer through Pip and Jane Baker’s masterpiece. Some say it’s their greatest work, their magnum opus. It’s Time and the Rani, written by Pip and Jane Baker and aired between September 7th and 28th, 1987.

Show-notes:

6:47: Much as I hate to link to this AGAIN, here’s The Bikini Bottom Horror.
10:57: If you want to listen to us talk about Back to the Future (and Crispin Glover’s legal battle), you’re in luck I guess.
17:29: Here’s a quick (but kind of old-ish) video about Hong Kong’s cage housing.
21:07: Behold: the Area 51 Naruto runner
22:30: Here’s the stupid asteroid/meteor/meteorite overview thing AGAIN.
37:16: If you want to listen to us talk about classic sci-fi, check out our classic sci-fi podcast Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast. Oh, and we also have a completed Blake’s 7 podcast called Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast. So if you wwant to hear a Blake’s 7 podcast from us, check that out.

Sapphire and Steel 5 – Assignment 5

I forgot my name again too. I can’t remember if I was Kiyan or Dylan.

We’ve trapped ourselves in an old-timey estate house in order to experience this episode to its fullest. We’re actually not sure who else is locked in here with us, I didn’t check to see if the property was vacated before we decided to record in here. I can hear a weird stone statue mouthing off in the basement so that’s pretty weird. It’s Assignment 5, written by Don Houghton and Anthony Read and aired between August 11th and 26th, 1981.

Show-notes:

1:27: Check out our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast, if you want to listen to us talk about Doctor Who.
30:56: Ok, so apparently ley lines are a way bigger irl deal than I thought they were. I found a few super legit sites like this one and this one that discuss birds and other animals moving and migrating across ley lines. Pretty interesting reads if nothing else.
33:07: I did a little googling about this and didn’t really find anything on it, but I did find this article about what happens when bacteria get viruses. So that’s pretty interesting.
48:12: Yes, apparently bronze does have copper in it.
1:08:26: Check out Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast, our Blake’s 7 Podcast. Also, the station that St. Clinton originally watched Blake’s 7 on was KTEH (now called KQEH). This station has shown a lot of British sci-fi in the San Francisco Bay Area over the years.

Redux 6 : Chekhov’s Stinger (Mindwarp)

It’s like a shitty version of the mystery mobile.

Alright gang buckle up because we’re coming to the end of this insane ride and we’re doing it right. And by doing it righ I mean we’re mindwarping ourselves, so I’ll putting my brain in Kiyan and he’s putting his brain in me and then absolutely nothing will change because as it turns out in the TYD canon we don’t really have defined characters. Or do we? Also we’ll be retconning that away in two weeks when we start Torchwood so. It’s Mindwarp, written by Philip Martin and aired between October 4th and 25th, 1986.

Show-notes:
2:09: Actual recorded audio of Philip Martin bailing.
6:56: The novel that features Sil is called Mission to Magnus. It came out in 1990… and also has the Ice Warriors in it?!
15:40: Actually according to the Tardis wiki, Perpugilliam means “she who lives in the hills.” So I don’t know what the hell I was talking about here.
19:33: The Rock actually streamed some of his “cheat day” meals recently. (Or maybe he always does this? I don’t know.) Here’s one of them.
24:16: Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast is a podcast where we talk about movie trilogies and that you should check out if you want to listen to us talk about movie trilogies in podcast format.
31:40: Dudley Simpson had already stopped composing for the show by this point.
36:09: Rare footage of Sil
55:17: Funny that we should mention Sapphire & Steel here considering we’re watching it for one of our other podcasts, Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast.
1:05:40: Yeah, the 1970 Cromwell movie has Alec Guinness in it.
1:07:47: Funny we should mention Blake’s 7 here since we have a completed Blake’s 7 podcast called Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
1:08:35: Vargas was the name of Brian Blessed’s character in Blake’s 7.

Sapphire and Steel 4 – Assignment 4 ft. 50dw50

Alternate title: Sapphire and Stalin

Kiyan and Dylan are like kind of really lame versions of the elementals. Which I bring up because that would explain why all of our guests are way cooler than us. Just like in this episode when we theorize that S&S are the outcasts who constantly fail, that would be us. And then the guests like Lead and Silver who are super suave and cool, that would be Keith and John. Damn. It’s Assignment 4, written by PJ Hammond and aired between January 27th and February 5th, 1981.

Show-notes:

2:11: Check out our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast. Here’s the specific episode that Keith was on.
7:15: Here’s the Anorak Zone’s Sapphire and Steel section. Really hope they finish this at some point.

28:27: Paul Darrow had his legs amputated because of an aortic aneurysm.
34:19: We watched Chuck for Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast, our movie trilogy podcast. Here’s the specific episode where we watched Chuck.
