Episode 52: Let Tarrant Into Your Heart Ft. Jim (Blake)

He just wants to be loved. I think.

Merry Christmas, we hope you’ll enjoy this rendition of “jingle bells, decomposing Blake smells, Avon took a bullet.” They’re all dead is what I’m saying, and frankly we had no idea when we started this podcast that Blake would fall on Christmas, which is really a rather fun coincidence. Fun might not have been the word I’m looking for actually, in retrospect. It’s Blake, written by Chris Boucher and aired on December 21, 1981.

Show-notes:

2:10 Where are you Down and Safe? Why have you not put out an episode in 40 years.
3:34 If you don’t already know, Distant Star was a proposed version of the B7 to be used in Series D with lyrics written by Vere Lorrimer. Thankfully it never came to fruition.
9:40 Check out our latest Trust Your Doctor episode, where we discuss the Wedding of River Song.
1:07:59 The IT Crowd is just some show. Nothing special to see here, just move on.
1:23:02 Check out Krynoid Podcast if you haven’t already. They’re great.

You guys should do a Star Cops podcast next. It is only 9 episodes long. The DVD is hard to find but all the episodes are currently on YouTube. Set in the near future(40 years into the future when it was aired in the summer of 1987 on BBC2) Mankind has finally started to expand out into space with several space stations, satellites in orbit, a base on the moon and a colony on Mars. This all needs policing so enter the ISPF, the International Space Police Force more commonly known as the Star Cops. Created by Chris Boucher. A very under rated series that never got a chance.

Some of the space stations were called the Charles De Gaulle, the American station the Ronald Reagon and the Coral Sea. Apologies for the spelling mistakes.

Paul Darrow met his wife on this episode, unfortunately she passed away about 5 years ago

Hey guys. Tarrant is a hero! Bless him. Don’t forget the teleport is not working 100% while they’re crashing. It would’ve been too risky. I think the “Goodbye Tarrant” moment is really moving.

Glynis said in an interview she felt like they were doomed once she joined because Soolin was from the planet where they all died. The gunslinger really didn’t want to go back there and doesn’t seem to be completely herself.

I also like Slave’s demise. Suppose I’m not that cold. 🙂 He does address the women, as ‘madam’.

The talented Janet Lees Price (RIP) only wanted to be on it if her husband shot her. She wasn’t a science fiction fan, by the way. 🙂

I agree Dayna was the most innocent and that’s probably why she was gunned down first. She was being reckless again. Tarrant the sweetheart sort of cradles Dayna’s body. He did care about her. Soolin was also upset about her friend’s death and that, apart from being on GP, got her shot after just killing one guard.

Vila is obviously angry about Arlen killing Dayna. I didn’t mind him saying ‘Sorry’. He was just being a British gentleman. He did hit a woman after all and as opposed to Avon didn’t appear to consider it normal. 🙂

Thank you for covering the 52 episodes of my favorite series. Your podcasts have been truly awesome.

Re Tarrant: Just to be clear, I meant it would’ve been to risky for Tarrant to dematerialize as well with the teleport malfunctioning.

I never thanked you for inspiring me to write again. Hope you enjoy my feminist B7 Doctor Who crossover horror fantasy story. By the way, here in Germany near Cologne where I’m vacationing with my Saffa boyfriend I found another reference to Mary Shelley! 🙂 Thanks for all your literary recommendations and recommendations of other shows, guys! Have you ever watched Dempsey and Makepeace (YouTube)? The interplay between classy Glynis and her future brash American husband is intriguing.

Happy New Year! Hope 2019 will bring you more excitement and science fiction fun! 🙂

Hey guys. Thank you for covering Blake’s 7. I’ve greatly enjoyed listening to your podcast and revisiting the episodes with you. That last one really captures the spirit of Christmas, doesn’t it? I can just wonder about how many young fans were left traumatized shortly before the holidays.

I didn’t watch most of Blake’s 7 until 25 years later, and had managed to spoiler myself by that time. But the last scene was still very effective. It’s a beautiful combination of camera work and sound, creating an extremely intense atmosphere.

I liked that Vila got some moves in before he was shot. I took his ‘sorry’ to be sarcastic rather than him genuinely feeling remorse for hitting a woman.

I agree with you that having Servalan in this episode would have felt overstuffed. Nevertheless I’m a bit sad that we didn’t get to see her one last time. She’s always been one my favourite SF characters – the perfect role-model for an aspiring super-villainess. (Not that I ever lived up to that aspiration.)

Happy New Year! I hope you still manage to have fun with the Trust Your Doctor podcast. I’m curious what you’ll have to say about Peter Capaldi and Jodie.

PS: Please consider giving LEX a shot sometime in the future. That show’s just completely bonkers.
