UFO 21: Computer-Affair

I had an affair with a computer once. (Editor’s note: Her (2013))

It was a long time ago. Back when computers were curvy and that was attractive. She was a big hulking room sized machine. A Cray-1. Man the curves on that thing. Just knew how to turn me on in all the right ways. It’s Computer Affair written by Tony Barwick and aired on April 28, 1971.

Show-notes:
0:12:
My (Dylan’s) voice sounds like I lost my bass frequencies this week (Editor’s note: sounds the same to me). I think it’s because of the box fan I had running (see show-note at 7:48). We used to do test recordings, remember when we used to do that? (Editor’s note: I do now.)
7:48: We’re currently going through one of the worst heat waves of all time here in California, right after the UK got the same thing.
30:03: Blackbird singing in the dead of night….
48:27: Here’s a picture of Lt. Ellis at the end of the episode for you to decide for yourself how differently she looks.
55:25: Cmon man, you were the one who posited The Prisoner as the first meta video game ever made.
58:50: I’ll just list every Blake’s 7 podcast I know of here, cause why not:
Zenith (us)
Spacefall (idk whether hipcast is an official thing for them, or just one of those rogue podcast upload sites, but I didn’t want to link Apple Podcasts)
Straight Outta the Federation
Maximum Power
The Mutoid Podcast
Blake’s 7 in Character
Classically Awful

UFO 20: Court Martial

I’m an expert on Court Martials.

Look I was just kidding with that by-line. I don’t know anything about court martials actually, all I know is that they’re basically just military trials. I have as little contact with the military as possible in all honesty, although… nah I won’t say anything more. It’s Court Martial, written by Tony Barwick and aired on April 21, 1971.

Show-notes:
0:44: Ron Appleton Knives, definitely illegal where we are. These are some pretty sick knives actually. Some ill blades, you might say.
5:47 I don’t know who’s buying all this UFO merch, but here it is anyway, at shop dot gerryanderson dot com.
6:22: Space:1999 is up on ShoutFactory, for all you shoutheads (that’s what shoutfactory fans are called (just kidding I just made it up (or did I?)))
7:50: If you want to hear us talk about Doctor Who, check out our Doctor Who podcast, Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast. You can even listen to us talk about Doctor Who for like 2 weeks straight if you want. We have enough content to do that, and I know you have enough free time.
27:35: Have you betrayed us? Have you betrayed me? (This was the best youtube upload of this I could find, sorry)
1:01:46 Or was it all a bit?

UFO 19: Ordeal

Recording this episode was an Ordeal.

I’ve survived loads of ordeals though. This one was pretty trivial compared to some of the ordeals I’ve been through in my life. There was that time I got held up at a red light when I really needed to pee. Now that was what I call a true ordeal. It’s Ordeal, written by Tony Barwick and aired on April 14, 1971.

Show-notes:
6:11: For “once” we’re trusting Wikipedia over all other sources for this information.
9:18: Apple was the Beatles’ record company. The Beatles were notoriously protective of their image, so it was difficult to license music from them for use in TV or movies. (Allegedly) all the estates involved in the Beatles (Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono) need to sign off on your usage. Here’s a report with some of this information when their music was used in Mad Men.
10:59: You can watch UFO for free. With ads. Very easily. In fact, here’s this episode.
17:22: Gotcha. Also check out our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
27:11: For the 5 millionth week, here’s the shado library timeline.
35:00: I guess since Nope is based on Evangelion and that’s based on this, Nope is basically UFO’s grandchild.
43:30: Yeah so the closest thing I could find to this was postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which isn’t as severe. So yeah idk, and I’m too lazy to keep searching, so this is the best you’re getting.
54:02: Found a video of the Lucky Luke video game for you to relive my childhood with me.
56:07: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? Also, I’m guessing this is the Cadbury ad Gary Myers was in. Very Prisoneresque in a way.
57:38: Lmao, as if I was going to be not lazy enough to look this up.

UFO 18: Timelash ft. Steven Shinder

Is there a spacelash?

Timelash, spacelash, temporallash, they’re all the same thing. It’s just a time corridor that links you to the future. Or the past. And you have to jump into it and travel through time and… I don’t know where I’m going with this, it’s 10:30 at night and I only just remembered I needed to edit the episode and quite frankly I’m already half asleep so cut me some slack. It’s Timelash, written by Terence Feely and aired on February 17, 1971.

Show-notes:
0:39: It took Steven all of 39 seconds (10 of which were the intro music) to reference the Doctor Who episode Timelash.
1:55: Sad news today gang, Lexico is on the way out.
7:15: Thankfully Steven sent us the link to the massive mayo gummy bear.
17:20: Spoiler Alert: “combatist” is not a word. (Editor’s note: who cares, is now.)
22:00: We have an episode on A.B. and C. earlier on Inevitable.
22:16 And I have a three part blog post about the Prisoner video game which you can read on this very website. Wow.  Here’s part one.
40:17: Wikipedia has a surprising amount of information on the UAP Task Force.
1:03:50: Kiyan is referencing the “always has been” meme in a rare moment where Kiyan references a meme made after 2008.
1:13:43: Here’s links to all of Steven’s Stuff, from his email:

UFO 17: The Dalotek Affair

I had an affair with a Dalek once.

No, I swear, I did! He was very loving. He treated me nicely and would always hunt down anybody who ever hurt me. If somebody said something mean to me he would exterminate them. If somebody got in my way he would destroy them. And if I did anything wrong he’d…. It’s The Dalotek Affair, written by Ruric Powell and aired on February 10, 1971.

Show-notes:
2:30: For more on Doctor Who, make sure not to go to any other source besides Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast. Seriously, if you do, you’ll regret it, probably. Don’t even watch the actual show, just listen to our episodes.
6:20: I don’t know anything about these writers except the first 20 pages of Gravity’s Rainbow so I’ll let Kiyan link anything more about them (if he wants). (Editor’s note: meh, I’ll just take the path of least resistance and link Thomas Pynchon and Don DeLillo on wikipedia. Le mao.
7:19: Good news, PopApostle is making its triumphant return to the podcast through their Dalotek Affair page.
19:10: About 6 hours after this podcast, Kiyan saying “just another day in the life of me” would take on a more sinister meaning. No, I will not elaborate, I just think it’s funny to say.
36:55: How have we still not internalized the difference between meteors, meteorites, and asteroids after all these years.
47:00: We talked about Torchwood over on Trust Your Doctor, and retcon is a drug used on that show to erase people’s minds.
50:04: Our listeners in the UK might not know what Nickelodeon slime is so here. This is what Nickelodeon slime is.

UFO 16: The Man Who Came Back

butnowimback-pinkmartini.wav

Guess who’s back? Back again? Inevitable. Inevitable is back and you might say that it was all Inevitable because god dammit that’s exactly why we named ourselves that. Because this was always inevitable. Always. For all time. It’s The Man Who Came Back, written by Terence Feely and aired on February 3, 1971.

Show-notes:
1:15: Here’s the discussion on “you-foe” vs “you-eff-oh”.
7:11: According to the best dictionary, Lexico (editor’s note: unironically), there is not a word for anything higher than “thrice”
8:10: For more on the Craig/Cregg tangent, see this random Quora post (editor’s note: this is actually a Reddit post though) I found.
17:00: For more on Blake’s 7, check out our Blake’s 7 podcast Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
35:40: £100 in today’s money is £1,316. Oof. (Editor’s note: ouch ouch oh god) When we started Trust Your Doctor in 2014 it was only worth £1,086.

UFO 15 – Flight Path

The FAA did not approve this episode.

I had a flight path filed once, for the local airport. It was a pretty steep path, came in right over these houses. And we saw a guy just standing in the road with a rocket launcher. I dunno how they got there, but there they were. Just shooting off some missiles. It’s Flight Path, written by Ian Scott Stewart and aired on January 12, 1971.

Show-notes:
8:00: Alright here’s the SHADO Library timeline yet again. I feel like I should just link it at the start of the show-notes every week.
10:41: Firefox is a well known web browser. (Editor’s note: lol. (Editor’s note: “lol” stands for “laugh out loud.”))
25:19: Speaking of Blake’s 7, here’s where I shill our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
29:20: Here’s the Japanese intro to UFO, which features a voiceover narration that isn’t in the original.
54:30: Check for yourself if you think he looks like John Lithgow or not. Here’s George Cole on IMDB, and here’s John Lithgow.

UFO 14 – Mindbender

When it comes to benders, you’ve got a couple types to choose from. First. there’s bender from Futurama, Then, there’s bendy straws. And that’s it. Usually, those are your only options. But UFO provides a third. It’s Mindbender, written by Tony Barwick and aired on January 13, 1971.

Show-notes:
3:50: Pretty sure Steven will suggest “Fully Armed and Operational Emotional Battlestation” as a title
4:00: Let me tell you about the last time I went Full Force. (Actually only around 50 minutes.)
21:11: Go and find out the origin of based for yourself on knowyourmeme.
25:55: Invasion of the Bodysnatchers might have Bodysnatched Kiyan. By the way, I was wrong about there being a movie called The Bodysnatchers. That’s actually what the book the movie Invasion of the Bodysnatchers is based on is called. There’s a previous movie called The Body Snatcher though, based on the short story The Body Snatcher.
1:04:36: Jon Pertwee wasn’t in Catweazle, but according to an unsourced bit of trivia from IMDB, he was meant to have been in it or something. I have no clue how I knew this.

UFO 13 – Survival

Guess what? Inevitable survived our hiatus and we’re officially back in action.

So this week I was walking down the road when I was bitten by a cheetah person. Oh shoot, wrong show. Uh, shoot, uh actually it was an alien. With green skin. It bit me on my arm, through my space suit. Yeah that’s what happened. It’s Survival, written by Tony Barwick and aired on January 5, 1971.

Show-notes:
3:00: Good news, I can link you to the timeline right here.
12:39: The “moon commander” column is on the timeline previously linked.
18:32: I’m pretty sure this scene Kiyan is referring to is The Psychobombs. You can even listen to our episode on The Psychobombs if you want. I mean why would you, right? But you can if you want to. (Don’t. (Nah, JK, do.))
48:32: They do actually drive on the right all the time in UFO, as evidenced by this picture collage. Interestingly there’s not an official statement on this, but ufoseries.com postulates that it was because it was predicted that when England joined the EU that they would swap, so when Gerry Anderson moved the show 10 years into the future he predicted that they would swap. Apparently when UFO flashes back to the 70’s they drive on the left in the 70’s.
56:40: The Blake’s 7 wiki isn’t as detailed as the TARDIS wiki but it’s good enough to read about Deliverance.
1:01:20: Coming in Clutch with a link to our Spectre of Lanyon Moor episode.

Audio 28: Theatre Theater (Redacted)

We all now belong to the Church of Sil.

Look, it’s a podcast about old doctor who characters coming back and appearing in the most random way possible. How can you not expect that Sil would make an appearance? He’s basically the greatest character that’s ever graced our television screens. And I mean that most sincerely. It’s Redacted, written by Juno Dawson, Catherine Brinkworth, Ella Watts, Sasha Sienna, Ken Cheng, Àjoké Ibironke, Doris Sutherland, and David Barnes, and released between April 12 and June 19, 2022.

Show-notes:
6:24: If you want to listen to Redacted yourself without pirating it, you can listen on BBC Sounds.
10:25: Remember this statement about shots, because Kiyan’s going to forget he said it. (Editor’s note: I don’t know what this means.)
10:58: The Blue Box Podcast is a podcast about Doctor Who.
11:42: I did it anyway.
14:14: Partners in Crime. The name of the episode was Partners in Crime.
19:50: I’m not even going to bother trying to find this thread because I won’t be able to.
23:00: Don’t worry, the TARDIS wiki has an extensive page on Clive Finch.
26:27: The disappearing hospital was seen in Smith and Jones.
29:14: I feel like most of the links in these show-notes are going to be TARDIS wiki links, but anyway, here’s Oliver Morgenstern. I was also mildly wrong, the actor for Oliver also did not return for this audio.
36:40:  The Larry Nightingale “ARG” is pretty wild all things considered.
37:20: “Ergodic literature” refers to texts that take effort on the part of the reader to engage with.
47:09: Let’s all remember The Zygon Invasion/Inversion thanks to the TARDIS wiki.
50:55: Remember what I told you to remember earlier?
58:36: IF you want to hear us talk about Firefly for some reason, check out Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast, our classic sci-fi podcast, where we covered that show last year (i.e. 2021).
1:00:40: Also check out Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast, our Blake’s 7 podcast, cause why not?
1:07:40: List of Sil’s Appearances. There are far too many of these if you ask me.
1:10:00: I would normally cut sneezes out but the Sil spinoff necessitated leaving Kiyan’s blessings of us all in the recording.
1:21:10: SILOET (the SHADO reference) is actually an alleged evolution of UNIT later in the Doctor Who timeline. Also lmao at Dylan’s pronunciation here. It’s “silhouette” lol.
1:28:06: Kick some ass, get the girl, and try to look dope while you do it.
1:07:40: Charlie Craggs actually does have an IMDB page. Though there’s nothing on it besides this as of this writing.
