Inevitable

We’re not doing this for you.

We’re not doing it for us.

We know not at what depths the currents that compelled us to discuss and “review” classic sci-fi tv and movies in a laid-back, slightly analytical, somewhat-humorous fashion run.

So what do we know?

It was all inevitable.

Sapphire and Steel 1 – Assignment 1

“It’s pretty clear” – Kiyan, about halfway through this episode.

It’s the start of the third season of Inevitable, which is massively increasing our season count already. Two was a record to begin with, and now three is the record, can you believe it? And soon in like 8 weeks it’ll be broken yet again. It’s Assignment 1, written by PJ Hammond and aired between July 10th and 26th, 1979.

1:08:10: Bringing Up Baby was released in 1938.
1:23:07: Here’s the intro to Callan. It is pretty ominous, but somehow the way Dylan described it I thought there wouldn’t be any music.
1:24:42: We’re still approaching Torchwood. We’ll be starting it on Trust Your Doctor in a month or two.
1:28:51: Apparently Find a Grave is a thing.
1:33:36: Here’s Eurovision 1966’s “A Man Without Love,” composed by Cyril Ornadel.

Children of the Stones 7 – Full Circle ft. Jim (The Krynoid Podcast)

How many times can I reference Doctor Who this week?

This is the second season finale for Inevitable, and this time we’ve actually gone all out and gotten a guest. That’s quite a step up from Star Cops which just kind of… ended. And then it wasn’t really an end because we were back the next week. Well this time that won’t be true. Triple Play will be returning in Inevitable’s place so look out for that! It’s Full Circle, written by Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray and aired on February 21, 1977.

Show-notes:

12:45: For those who don’t know who Charlie Chan is (like I didn’t), he’s (far as I can tell) a fairly controversial fictional detective.
35:47: It was Return to the Stones
47:52: The series I was thinking about here was The Clifton House Mystery.
1:02:22: Lucas apparently drew heavily on The Hidden Fortress when creating Star Wars.
1:31:48: Check out Krynoid Podcast to hear Jim talk about Doctor Who.
1:33:41: And check out Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast to hear us talk about movie trilogies.

Children of the Stones 6 – Squaring the Circle

Personally I find circles to be a much more pleasing shape than squares.

Oh god I can’t believe how late I was in uploading this episode. Or was I? In reality this podcast exists within a temporal loop, and is continuously being repeated for all eternity. Which means you’ve already heard this episode, and will hear it again soon. It’s Squaring the Circle written by Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray and aired on February 14, 1977.

Show-notes:

1:30: Check out Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast
1:50: Squaring the circle is an actual thing.
3:59: If you want to hear us disparage Adric from Doctor Who way more than we do here, heck out Trust Your Doctor: A Doctor Who Podcast.
14:24: SnooPING AS usual I see. Also, here’s an explanation of Big Chungus for the uninitiated (like me).
25:50: If you for some reason want to hear us talk more about the Troll “trilogy” (including “Troll 3,” the movie we talk about here), check out our Triple Play episode on it.

Children of the Stones 5 – Charmed Circle

Honestly when was the last time you even heard the word charmed?

Honestly this episode seems to have already flown my memory. It’s been like a week and a half or so since I watched it and my brain has just completely and utterly discarded it. Like, it’s just frankly gone. Or at least it was until I remembered that this was the episode with the you know what sandwich. Shudder. It’s Charmed Circle, written by Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray and aired on February 7, 1977.

4:37: For more about Mission to Destiny, check out Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
6:32: Nolo contendere. It was actually Scotland that had “not proven
18:49: For more on Fred 2, check out Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast. Yes, it’s the sequel to the feature-length film about Fred.
21:03: I corrected myself from McDonald’s to KFC here, but let’s be honest they probably both do this.
23:16: The wikipedia page for Forbidden Planet has more info on how the animation in the movie was done. And I wasn’t right about how it was done.
27:00: Ok, here’s the weird thing. I found the page again so I could post the link here (here it is), but it actually says “clearly match” and not “perfectly match.” I could’ve sworn it said “perfectly” and would still swear it did. I wouldn’t have even brought it up if it didn’t. This is some Twilight Zone stuff right here. Or maybe I just misread it. Who knows?

Children of the Stones 4 – Narrowing Circle

Wait how do you have a narrow circle?

I’m starting to wonder if this series could be even more trippy if I dropped some acid or smoked some weed right before watching it every week. I think that’s what Matt is doing so why can’t I do it as well? Tune in next week for the resolution to this thrilling plot line. Just kidding. It’s Narrowing Circle, written by Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray and aired on January 31, 1977.

Show-notes:

9:37: I could only find The Rhetoric of Temporality on Scribd, which you need an account for unfortunately.
18:49: According to this barbering timeline, barbers in ancient times (~900 according to this site) also performed surgeries and were called barber surgeons.
29:00: The Logan’s Run movie actually came out in 1976 and the tv series came out in late 77. It was actually Star Wars that came out on December 27, 1977 in the UK (just about a week before Blake’s 7).

Children of the Stones 3 – Serpent in the Circle

Now with 75% more recap!

The title of this episode makes me think heavily of the ouroboros, which is that snake arranged in a circle that’s eating its own tail. Although really a snake isn’t the same as a serpent but the mistake is easy to make as far as I’m concerned. What is a serpent anyway? It’s Serpent in the Circle, written by Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray and aired on January 24, 1977.

Children of the Stones 2 – Circle of Fear

Why do I have this weird feeling that there’s an episode of Doctor Who with this name?

This might be one of the shortest “actual” episodes we’ve ever released. Obviously our introductory episodes are always shorted than this, but this covers an actual topic! A whole full 25 minute episode that we condensed into a whole 21 minute podcast episode. Amazing that’s a whole 4 minutes we saved you. It’s Circle of Fear, written by Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray and aired on January 17, 1977.

Show-notes:

1:48: According to Wikipedia, Dai is a Welsh name.
6:02: Here’s the mentos & coke fishing video. They’re catfish by the way. Mudskippers are another type of fish that are able to live in and out of water.
18:17: Speaking of Neverending Story 3, we watched Neverending Story 3 for our movie trilogy podcast Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast, which you should check out cause it desperately needs the listeners.
18:50: The Black Cauldron was a book that came out in the 60s before Disney made the movie.

Children of the Stones 1 – Into the Circle

Personally I find triangles much more pleasing to the eye.

It’s time for us to journey beyond our perception of euclidian space time. It’s time we shut the door on the simple shows of the past, that dealt with complex, 3 dimensional shapes. It’s finally time to take a look at what might be both the most simple and yet also the most complex two dimensional shape: The Circle.  It’s Into the Circle, written by  Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray and aired on January 10, 1977.

Star Cops 9 – Little Green Men and Other Martians

And so we have reached our second series finale.

The title of this episode remind me of that Star Trek episode that one time when Quark went back in time and it turned out he was the alien that crash landed at Roswell, New Mexico. That would have been the weirdest thing about this episode, tbh, if it had suddenly turned into a crossover with Star Trek. Can you imagine?! It’s Little Green Men and Other Martians, written by Chris Boucher and aired on August 31st, 1987.

Show-notes:

1:39: This episode was always meant to be the finale to the show with the cliffhanger ending of them going to Mars. In the original plan this was episode 10, but one episode (the original episode 9) was cancelled and they just moved this one up.
5:29: Episode 5 was written by Philip Martin.
36:00: I’ll just leave this here again: Big Finish Star Cops hub
41:18: To them I say you should listen to Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.

Star Cops 8 – Other People’s Secrets

Two people can keep a secret if one of them is dead.

I have never seen a psychiatrist, but I have seen a psychologist. And I’m starting to really wonder how that distinction could be so massively lost in Star Cops. I mean, they do and perform completely and utterly different tasks so the confusion between the two is honestly baffling. Unless Parr just happens to be a psychiatrist that also performs psychological duties, which then that’s all well and good. It’s Other People’s Secrets, written by John Collee and aired on August 24th, 1987.

Show-notes:

13:15: Check out Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast, our Blake’s 7 podcast.
32:27: War Horse was directed by Stephen Spielberg
43:33: More about Bright if you care. Also, Wikipedia describes this as urban fantasy and not high fantasy, so that’s a little disappointing.
46:24: Ok here we go:
Like the ripple of the water sends a message to the shore
So for now and ever after I will miss you more and more
It won’t be easy
No, no
I won’t be easy without you
No, no
I won’t be easy
No, no, no.

Shine a light into the darkness find an answer everyday
How I wish that you were with me now I know that come what may
It won’t be easy
No, no
It won’t be easy without you
No, no
It won’t be easy
No, no, no.

Reach across the stars let them know you’re with me
Reach across the stars send out the word let them know what can be
Send out the word I remember you.

In the shelter of the moonlight in the shadow of the sun
In the silence that’s eternal there’s a blessing one by one
It won’t be easy
No, no
It won’t be easy without you
No, no
It won’t be easy
No, no, no.

Thanks, David.
